At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in February this year, many mobile phone manufacturers brought folding screen designs to the display, such as Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X. In fact, OPPO applied for a foldable mobile phone patent to the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) in October 2018. Now the patent has been published, including design sketches and color renderings. It can be seen that the camera of this phone adopts a pop-up design.
The pop-up camera design can reduce the thickness of the frame and allow the phone to take pictures and record videos in either the unfolded or folded state. Selfies can be taken through the control of the camera and image processor, which means that this camera can switch between the front and rear cameras.
Currently, not much information has been released about this phone. In addition to the pop-up camera, there is also a 3.5mm headphone jack on the phone. Samsung's Galaxy Fold and Huawei's Mate X have both been actual products. The novelty of foldable screen phones is indeed very attractive, but the current user demand for foldable phones is not great, and the initial price of related products is also very expensive, so only a few enthusiasts will buy them.
The current Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate X both use normal camera phones, while the pop-up camera of OPPO's folding screen phone is similar to the previous VIVO NEX. However, judging from the design drawings, OPPO's pop-up camera is not a single camera, so it is still unknown how it will be designed in the end. We need to wait until the real product model or engineering prototype comes out to understand.
