Since Samsung and Huawei launched the Galaxy Fold and Mate X foldable screen phones respectively, the era of foldable products has been opened. It is regarded as a revolutionary new generation of terminal products that will eventually blur the boundaries between smartphones, tablets and even PC products.
The most critical component of foldable screen products is the display screen, which is currently mainly a flexible OLED panel. Samsung Galaxy Fold uses its own AMOLED panel, and Huawei Mate X uses a panel jointly developed by China's BOE.
At last week's SID Display Week International Conference, BenQ Materials, a subsidiary of BenQ, also announced the development of ultra-thin functional films that meet the needs of display applications of various curvatures and sizes. The latest mobile wearable phones launched in cooperation with customers will be displayed on site, demonstrating BenQ Materials' R&D strength in the field of optical functional films and material science.
Foldable panels are the next market hotspot, and other panel companies will not miss this opportunity. At the SID conference, LG also demonstrated its own foldable screen panel, and it was a large 13.3-inch foldable panel.
The panel of the foldable screen notebook announced by Lenovo before was supplied by LG. This new type of foldable notebook is expected to be launched in 2020.
South Korean media reported that LG CTO Kang In-byeong announced that its foldable panel is mature and ready for commercial use. He also said that "the foldable panel technology used in smartphones is more difficult than foldable screen notebooks and tablets."
As for when foldable screen devices will become mainstream in the market, Kang In-byeong said that the current technical challenges are still great, but it will ultimately depend on device manufacturers.
