Market research firm IDC released the global smartphone market statistics report for the first quarter of 2019.

The report shows that the total number of smartphone shipments in the first quarter of this year was 310.8 million, down 6.6% from 332.7 million in the same period last year. Among them, Huawei's total smartphone shipments in the quarter reached 59.1 million, a year-on-year increase of 50.3%, closely following Samsung; vivo's total smartphone shipments in the quarter reached 23.2 million, a year-on-year increase of 24%, slightly higher than OPPO; it is worth mentioning that Huawei and vivo are also the only two manufacturers in the top five that achieved year-on-year growth.
Samsung Electronics' shipments in the first quarter of this year decreased by 8.1% compared with last year, while Apple's smartphone shipments in the first quarter were 36.4 million units, a significant decline of 30.2% compared with the same period last year.

Among the top five manufacturers currently ranked by IDC, Huawei has the most significant increase, followed by vivo. This is closely related to the two companies' investment in product strategy layout and R&D. As for Apple, which has seen the biggest drop, according to the recently released second quarter report for fiscal year 2019, it may be facing more problems than expected.
