Over the past week, users have reported serious issues with the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX MBA design graphics card, which can cause it to overheat and hit a temperature wall, causing it to throttle.

While AMD's initial response was that "everything is normal," according to the latest official statement, AMD acknowledged the issue and asked affected users to contact the support team for after-sales service.

AMD says it's still determining the root cause of the card's overheating issue, and the official statement more or less confirmed that the issue may be related to the thermal design, something hardware experts like Der8auer and Igor's Lab have also previously pointed out.

We are working to determine the root cause of unexpected throttling experienced by some people using AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards manufactured by AMD.

Based on what we've seen so far, we believe the issue is related to the thermal solution used in AMD's reference designs and appears to be present in a limited number of sold graphics cards.

We are working to resolve this issue for affected cards. Customers experiencing this unexpected limitation should contact AMD Support.

It is understood that AMD stated that the issue only exists in a limited number of Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards, but the actual number of affected graphics cards may be higher. According to Igor's Lab, through conversations with some system builders/distributors, They say these issues have been occurring for weeks and are affecting not just one batch, but several batches (4-6). Here is a quote from Igors Lab:

This issue has been known for over two weeks, and AMD and distributors (internally) have been communicating about it. How the issue will ultimately be communicated to end customers has yet to be finalized.

AMD's announcement was originally scheduled for January 3, 2023, but was postponed. Presumably, the cause was a problem with the heat pipe, with several batches affected. It is currently assumed that there are 4-6 batches, thousands of graphics cards, and only MBA public design graphics cards are affected.

An internal email stated that they had to return more than 300 ASUS MBA, Sapphire MBA, Xxun MBA, and XFX MBA graphics cards to retailers/warehouses/wholesalers.
