Application of X-ray in Baggage Security Scanning

X-ray inspection is commonly used for security scanning of baggage, such as checked and carry-on baggage at airports. The items to be inspected are irradiated with X-rays, and the radiation that passes through the items but is not absorbed is collected on an array of image detectors (usually photodiodes). These detectors output ultra-low level currents that require special signal conditioning, and high-resolution data converters are required to achieve the necessary resolution to correctly visualize the scanned items. This signal conditioning is sometimes included in a single-chip data acquisition solution, as is the case with a precision analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with current-to-voltage (I-to-V) conversion. Other times, discrete very low current/noise front-end amplifiers measure and amplify the output current of the image detector array, and then drive independent voltage input ADCs. DSP Processor

The DSP processor can be used for imaging reconstruction, using the signals received by the image detector array to generate an image of the scanned object.

Amplifier

Amplifying low to medium frequency signals from image detector arrays for ADCs requires ultra-low current and noise amplifiers. These are often limiting components to achieve the wide dynamic range required. Because the signal amplitudes vary, a low noise transimpedance amplifier (TIA) is often required.

Converter

Delta-sigma type ADCs typically have integrated current-to-voltage (I-to-V) conversion and can be used to convert low-level currents into digital information that is processed by computing elements.

Voltage-input ADCs are often used when a separate front-end amplifier provides the current-to-voltage (I-to-V) conversion.

DAC is the most common basis for creating arrays.

Power Management

Provides power supply for the acquisition system to control the system.

Temperature Sensor

Often there are multiple channels in the system, causing the ambient temperature in the system to rise, thus requiring fan-controlled cooling.
