Meta has reportedly abandoned plans to develop custom chips for its AR glasses in favor of using Qualcomm's technology.
It is reported that Meta launched a custom chip program in 2019 to develop custom chips for AR glasses internally code-named Orion to improve performance.
Meta originally planned to customize the chip and use it in Orion AR glasses and other models of the Apollo project.
The hardware division's chip team is responsible for developing three specific chips, named Armstrong, Avogadro and Acropolis, which are mainly used for functions such as image recognition.
It is reported that due to financial pressure and strategic adjustments, Meta has now abandoned the relevant plans and turned to using Qualcomm chips in upcoming prototypes and future versions.
The Reality Labs division behind Meta’s consumer hardware has been dealing with major financial issues. The division’s most recent quarterly report showed revenue of $353 million and an operating loss of $4.5 billion.
Meta has also made large-scale layoffs, which have had a significant impact on the silicon team. Only a few team members will remain to manage relationships with external suppliers.
