The soft starter has many functions such as soft start, soft stop, pump control, timed low-speed operation, etc. Therefore, it has incomparable advantages over traditional step-down starters in the control of power equipment in the fields of industry and civil construction.

During the soft start time ts, the motor terminal voltage gradually increases from the set initial value to the full voltage, and the motor accelerates smoothly and steplessly. At the same time, ts can be adjusted (usually between 0.5 and 60s), which is conducive to the coordination with the low-voltage circuit breaker to prevent the instantaneous release of the low-voltage circuit breaker from tripping accidentally when the motor starts.

A soft starter is an electrical device that is mainly used to limit the peak value of the starting current of the motor, thereby reducing the mechanical wear of the equipment and the load impact of the power supply system during the startup process, and protecting the stability and operation safety of the motor and the power grid. The soft starter also has the following protection functions during use:

1. Overload protection: The soft starter sets a rated current threshold. When the motor running current exceeds this current threshold, it will cut off the power to protect the electrical equipment from the harm caused by overload operation.

2. Over-temperature protection: The soft starter has a built-in temperature sensor that can detect the self-heating of the device. When the ambient temperature is too high, the soft starter will automatically cut off the power supply to protect the safety of the device.

3. Phase loss protection: When a phase loss occurs during the use of the motor, the soft starter can automatically scan and detect to avoid equipment failure caused by phase loss, thereby protecting the mechanical and electrical performance of the equipment.

4. Short circuit protection: When a short circuit occurs in the circuit, the soft starter can cut off the power supply in time and protect its working state from being affected.

5. Power-off protection: The soft starter has a built-in backup power supply. If the main power supply fails or is interrupted, the soft starter will automatically start the backup power supply to ensure that the equipment continues to run.

In general, soft starters have many protection functions, which can realize automatic protection against various faults of electrical equipment such as short circuit, overload, phase loss, overtemperature, etc., and ensure the safety of equipment and protect the stability and safe operation of the power grid.
