Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) saw their first growth in the PC market in nearly a decade last year, and they expect this positive trend to continue into 2021.
According to sources, ODM Pegatron is seeing strong demand for notebooks, with both Microsoft and Asus placing eager orders in the first quarter to meet the growing needs of the stay-at-home economy. Huawei will also reportedly increase its focus on the laptop market, having previously been limited in the smartphone market by its inability to use the Google Play Store, which has limited their opportunities outside of the Chinese market. However, PC OEMs’ ambitions are being limited by component shortages, with processor shortages expected to get worse first.
Acer's Jason Chen said one of the reasons for the problem is the severe lack of support for 8-inch chip wafer foundry.
The U.S. government has pledged to take "aggressive steps" to address the global processor shortage, working with businesses and trading partners to identify the worst choke points in the supply chain and develop "strategies" to prevent future bottlenecks.
