DSP applications are becoming more and more widespread, and it is very important to correctly design the power circuit of DSP application systems. This article gives a dual power supply voltage supply circuit suitable for TI's fixed-point digital signal processor TMS320C206. For design reference.
1 TMS320 series DSP and its power supply circuit
The TMS320 series digital signal processor (DSP) is a product of the American TI Company. Since TI successfully launched the first-generation DSP product TMS32010 in 1982, TI has successively launched fixed-point series C1X, C2X, C5X and floating-point series C3X, C4X and other upgraded products. Due to their internal structure and peripheral equipment, There are different types of configurations to meet the development needs of different users. Now, TI divides its main DSP products into three major platforms: TMS320C2000, TMS320C5000 and TMS320C6000. TMS320C2XX is a fixed-point DSP product of TMS320C2000. The DSPs of this series are all 16-bit, with fast operation speed (up to 40MIPS), strong functions, and affordable price. The source code is compatible with C1X and C2X, and is upwardly compatible with C5X. Its excellent performance has greatly broadened its application fields, even including the application range of traditional microcontrollers (MCU). As a result, it has become a DSP product that is currently very popular among users. Table 1 gives the main products and brief descriptions of the TMS320C2XX series.

Like the microcontroller application system, the DSP power supply circuit design is an important part of the DSP application system design. TMS320C206 is somewhat different from TI's early DSPs in terms of voltage supply. It uses dual power supply voltages, and its CPU core voltage is 3.3V (for the TMS320C5000 series and TMS320C6000 series, there are now 2.5V and 1.8V products). And the I/O voltage is 5V. Since DSP is a data processing microprocessor,Generally, the system has to undertake a large number of real-time numerical calculations, and the components inside the CPU are switched on and off very frequently, so the system power consumption will be greatly increased. Reducing the core voltage that supplies power to the CPU inside the DSP is undoubtedly the most effective way to reduce system power consumption. One of the methods is that the external I/O voltage is 5V. How to interface the DSP with other CMOS peripheral devices without adding an external level conversion circuit? The following uses TI's low dropout voltage regulator TPS7133 as an example to give a power supply circuit that provides dual power supply voltages for TMS320C206.
2 Low dropout voltage regulator TPS7133
The low dropout voltage regulator TPS7133 is also a product of TI. It is available in 8-pin D and 20-pin PW packages. Figure 1 is the pin arrangement diagram of TPS7133, and the description of each pin is listed in Table 2. The main features of TPS7133 are as follows:
●With 3.3V regulated output;
●The typical value of quiescent current is 285μA;
●The output current can reach 500mA;
●With Power Good (power good) indication function.
Figure 2 is the internal structure diagram of TPS7133. Among them, IN is the voltage input terminal, and the input voltage range is 4.3~10V. OUT is the voltage output terminal, with a typical value of 3.3V at 25°C. Within the operating temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, its output voltage is a minimum of 3.23V and a maximum of 3.37V. There are two comparators on the TPS7133 chip, one of which has a reference voltage of 1.178V. The other input of this comparator is the voltage of the SENSE terminal divided by R1 and R2. In practical applications, SENSE is generally connected to the voltage output terminal OUT. The on-chip R1 is 420kΩ and R2 is 233kΩ. When the output voltage is 3.3V, it can be calculated that the voltage at the positive input terminal of the comparator is 1.177V, so this comparator The output is low level. For another comparator with a reference voltage of 1.12V, its negative input terminal is 1.177V, so the output of this comparator is also negative.
3 Dual power supply circuit of TMS320C206
As mentioned before, TMS320C206 operates with dual supply voltages of 5V and 3.3V. Assuming that the 5V voltage has been obtained after processing, the DSP power supply circuit designed using TRS7133 is shown in Figure 3. In Figure 3, the input voltage is 5V, which can be used as the I/O voltage of the DSP; the output is 3.3V, which can be used as the core voltage of the DSP.
