Hyundai Motor, Hexagon Positioning Intelligence, Valeo and a major mobile network operator are showcasing a new technology at CES 2020. The system uses proprietary high-precision positioning (HPP) technology with centimeter-level accuracy to further enhance the vehicle's advanced active safety technologies and pinpoint the vehicle's exact location on the road.

Demonstrated at CES on the all-new 2020 Hyundai Sonata, HPP combines standardized technologies used in cellular networks and vehicles, allowing for rapid deployment:

1. The mobile operator's network already has a data transmission channel;

2. Fixed receivers and TerraStar X correction technology are already in place, thanks to the Hexagon Group, and have become part of the positioning infrastructure;

3. Valeo has developed a telematics control device that can track vehicles and ensure the security of vehicle data transmission;

4. Hyundai already has the ability to integrate such communication systems into vehicle architecture.

GPS  positioning technology is widely used in the automotive industry, but currently, the positioning technology used in the automotive industry can only be accurate to a range of a few meters (1.5 meters to 3 meters under optimal conditions).

Developed in collaboration between Hexagon, Valeo and their mobile network operators, HHP works by applying TerraStar X technology, which corrects the GPS signals received by the vehicle through the cellular network channel. The signal corrections are determined by a network of fixed receivers, which know the absolute position of the receivers and can thus act as a permanent reference point. For example, after emergency braking, the vehicle will be able to send information about the driving maneuvers and the exact position (including which part of the road) to other vehicles, making it easier for other vehicles to predict what response is needed.

Being able to locate vehicles with high precision also creates opportunities for new uses and services. For example, cities can more effectively control traffic flow by knowing the real-time location of vehicles. It can also promote the development of self-driving cars, raising the level of autonomous driving from L2 to L5; it can also enable navigation systems in vehicles and smartphones to display more accurate and user-friendly maps.
