The market is weak and the prices are high, so what is the point of 8K TVs?

No matter how hard manufacturers promote it, 8K TVs are not chosen by more users. After all, there are too few places where they can be used.

A report released by market research firm IHS Markets stated that in the third quarter of this year, global sales of 8K TVs were 16,300 units, a 16% decrease from 32,500 units in the previous quarter.

8K TVs have been on sale since the fourth quarter of 2017, and sales have been growing steadily this year. In the first quarter of this year, 15,100 units were sold, and sales doubled to 32,500 units in the second quarter, but in the third quarter, sales fell from the second quarter. In particular, global TV sales in the third quarter increased by 14.9% from 47.71 million units in the previous quarter to 54.8 million units, but the 8K TV market declined, with 8K TVs accounting for only 0.05% of global TV sales in the third quarter.

Currently, only five companies in the world sell 8K TVs, namely Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sony, Sharp and  TCL . Lack of content and high prices are also considered to be the reasons for the weak sales of 8K TVs. According to IHS Markit's previous forecast, 8K TV shipments this year will reach 167,000 units, but by the end of the third quarter, the cumulative shipments were actually only 75,000 units.

At the recent home appliance exhibition, major appliance giants have launched 8K TVs, giving us the illusion that the world is about to enter the era of 8K TV popularization. However, the actual sales performance shows that 8K TVs are not yet accepted by more users.

The main reasons why 8K TV sales are not satisfactory at present are the lack of high-resolution content and the high price. This makes consumers feel that there is not much point in buying 8K TVs at present. Perhaps in the future, with the increase in 8K film sources and the maturity of manufacturing technology, after solving these two major consumer pain points, 8K TVs will usher in a new spring again.
