In July last year, Samsung announced that it had successfully developed the industry's first LPDDR5-6400 memory chip, based on a 10nm process with a single chip capacity of 8Gb (1GB). At the Qualcomm 4G/5G Summit held in Hong Kong last October, Samsung sources revealed that LPDDR5 memory is planned to be commercially available in 2020. At the end of February this year, JEDEC (Solid State Memory Association) officially released JESD209-5, the new low-power memory standard Low Power Double Data Rate 5 (LPDDR5).
Compared with the first-generation LPDDR4 standard released in 2014, the I/O speed of LPDDR5 has doubled from 3200 MT/s to 6400 MT/s (DRAM speed 6400Mbps).
If it is matched with the 64-bit bus commonly used in high-end smartphones, it can transmit 51.2GB of data per second; if it is matched with the 128-bit BUS of a PC, it can easily exceed 100GB per second.
The 6.4Gbps LPDDR5 memory is far from the end. As the world's largest memory chip manufacturer, Samsung is now researching higher-standard LPDDR5 chips. At the VLSI 2019 conference, they announced the 8nm LPDDR5 Phy physical layer chip, which increased the rate to 7.3Gbps in one fell swoop, and the power consumption is only 790mW.
In addition, Samsung is continuing to improve the speed of LPDDR4X memory. Currently, LPDDR4X-4266Mbps memory is already available, and Samsung's goal is 5Gbps LPDDR4X memory.
