Recently, MAHLE, a leading global automotive parts supplier, has developed a durable permanent magnet motor with excellent performance and unlimited operation. The new motor is extremely clean, light, efficient and can be made without the use of rare earths upon customer request. The newly developed product can be used in passenger cars and commercial vehicles, as well as in various types of construction machinery. The new product will debut at the IAA in September 2022.

The new SCT motor on the MAHLE test bench

The new SCT motor is designed to be particularly efficient within a certain speed range. Not only is its design very compact and lightweight, but its continuous output is more than 90% of its peak output. A typical example is driving an electric truck over a mountain or driving a pure electric car for multiple sprints. Until now, the existing motors on the market have not covered these applications sufficiently.

This toughness is made possible by the new MAHLE motor. The MAHLE motor uses innovative integrated cooling oil technology, which not only makes it more durable but also allows the waste heat generated to be used for the vehicle's entire system. At the same time, the extremely compact design offers advantages in terms of material and weight costs - the lighter motor requires less material during manufacturing and increases the possible payload of commercial vehicles.

Neodymium magnets are the strongest permanent magnets currently available and are used to generate the magnetic field in electric motors. However, in order to gain greater independence from raw material prices and geopolitical developments, SCT motors can also be designed without magnets, thus gaining greater independence.
