Renesas Electronics and AVL Collaborate to Provide Functional Safety Support to Customers and Promote Development of Automotive ECUs Compliant with ISO 26262

AVL provides comprehensive support to Renesas customers in developing complex and specialized functional safety systems

Beijing, China, February 17, 2022 - Renesas Electronics Corporation, a global supplier of semiconductor solutions, and AVL, a leading company dedicated to automotive system development, simulation, and testing, today announced that they will jointly support customers in developing electronic control units (ECUs) that comply with the ISO 26262 international automotive functional safety standard. Based on this collaboration, AVL will provide comprehensive support for Renesas automotive customers to develop higher performance functional safety systems.

Efficiently developing advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS)/autonomous driving (AD) systems that meet functional safety standards has become a challenge. To this end, Renesas has launched automotive R-Car system-on-chip (SoC), RH850 microcontroller (MCU), power management IC (PMIC), and software solutions for ISO 26262 safety levels ASIL B to ASIL D. However, in order to meet functional safety requirements, the entire ECU system, including semiconductor devices, must comply with the relevant standards. Therefore, even with products such as R-Car and RH850 that meet functional safety requirements, developing ECUs that meet ISO 26262 standards still requires deep system-level expertise. AVL is well-known for its hardware and software support for the development of ECUs that meet the ISO 26262 standard. Through this collaboration, Renesas customers will not only be able to take advantage of Renesas' cutting-edge safety solutions, but will also benefit from AVL's functional safety expert support to shorten the development cycle of ECUs that meet the ISO 26262 standard.

“We are pleased to bring AVL’s advanced technology and rich experience in automotive safety to Renesas customers,” said Naoki Yoshida, Vice President of Automotive Digital Product Marketing Division at Renesas Electronics Corporation. “This collaboration will enable our customers around the world to quickly develop ISO 26262-compliant ECUs with Renesas’ high-reliability products.”

“As ADAS/AD becomes more prevalent, the number of ECUs that need to support functional safety will increase significantly,” said Dirk Geyer, Director of Functional Safety and Cybersecurity at AVL. “AVL provides hardware and software support for all levels of safety assurance, including advanced support such as custom FMEDA and product-specific failure rate analysis. We look forward to providing comprehensive global support to Renesas customers.”

Excessive load rate also causes ECU errors
Humans have brains, computers have CPUs, and cars have ECUs. Obviously, if a car is compared to a person, then the four wheels are the limbs, the body and chassis are the skeleton, the various circuits and lines are the feedback nerves, and the ECU is the brain that controls the various thoughts and behaviors of the

Causes, effects and testing methods of automobile ECU ground drift
1. Why do cars drift? The only source of continuous power in a car is the battery. All controllers in the car are directly or indirectly connected to the positive and negative poles of the battery. The more common practice in automobiles is to connect the negative pole of the battery directly to the metal
