In September, CATL was invincible and remained the champion, but its market share fell by 1.9 percentage points month-on-month. Panasonic's installed capacity increased by more than 50% month-on-month, widening the gap with BYD again. If BYD wants to surpass Panasonic within the year, it will depend on its market performance in the last three months of this year.
Following Honeycomb Energy, another "dark horse" - Lishen Battery - entered the top 10 of the global power battery market in September. The installed capacity of AVIC Lithium Battery is getting closer to Panasonic and is expected to rank sixth in the world.
According to data from South Korean market research firm SNE Research, in September, the global installed capacity of power batteries was 32.9GWh, up 30.6% from the previous month. From January to September, the global installed capacity of power batteries was 195.4GWh, up 20.6% from the previous month.
In September, CATL continued to dominate the list, while LG and Panasonic still ranked second and third respectively. BYD, which was close to Panasonic in August, widened the gap with Panasonic in September and ranked fourth; SKI, Samsung SDI, AVIC Lithium Battery, Guoxuan High-tech, Lishen, and Envision AESC ranked in the top ten.
It is worth mentioning that Lishen Battery made the list for the first time and ranked ninth, while Honeycomb Energy, which made the list for the first time in August, fell off the list.
Year-on-year, CATL, LG, BYD, Guoxuan High-tech, and Lishen all achieved triple-digit growth, while SK, SDI, and AVIC Lithium Battery achieved double-digit growth. Only Envision AESC experienced negative growth year-on-year.
In terms of month-on-month growth rate, except for Guoxuan High-tech and AESC, which remained unchanged, other companies all achieved double-digit growth, especially Panasonic, which surged 53.6% month-on-month in September, followed by LG with a month-on-month growth of 44.4%.
Specifically, in September, CATL's installed capacity was 10.6GWh, a month-on-month increase of 23.3%. The surge in installed capacity was due to the strong sales of Tesla, Hongguang MINIEV, GAC Aion, and Benben E-Star models.
BYD's installed capacity was 2.9GWh, up 16% from the previous month, ranking fourth. As Panasonic's installed capacity in September increased by more than 50% from the previous month, the gap between BYD and Panasonic widened again.
AVIC Lithium's installed capacity was 0.9GWh, up 28.6% from the previous month, ranking seventh. Guoxuan High-tech's installed capacity was 0.7GWh, the same as in August, ranking eighth. In the Chinese market, Guoxuan High-tech ranked third and AVIC Lithium ranked fourth.
Following the dark horse "Honeycomb Energy", another "dark horse" - Lishen Battery - entered the top 10 of the global power battery market in September.
This old state-owned joint-stock company, which was established in 1997, has never dominated the headlines like companies such as CATL and BYD. After 25 years, Lishen Battery has finally ranked among the top ten in the international power battery field and can finally dominate the headlines.
In addition to expanding the Chinese market, Lishen Battery is also continuously exploring the international market. It has power battery business cooperation with international automakers such as Volkswagen and Daimler, and has become a designated power battery supplier for the EasyGo BBG project, a new energy joint venture established by the Renault-Nissan Alliance.
In order to meet the market demand in the next few years, Lishen Battery has already established multiple bases in Tianjin, Qingdao, Suzhou and other places in terms of production capacity layout. It currently has a production capacity of 14GWh and the company plans to form a production capacity of 30GWh by 2020.
Envision AESC's installed capacity was 0.3GWh, which was the same as in August, ranking tenth. At present, Envision Power has built six power battery production bases in France, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, China and other places, with a total planned production capacity of over 140GWh.
LG's installed capacity was 7.8GWh, up 110.8% year-on-year and 44.4% month-on-month. The surge in installed capacity was due to the hot sales of Tesla China Model Y, Volkswagen ID.4, Ford Mustang Mach-E, etc.
In addition, Hyundai, Audi, Jaguar Land Rover, Porsche, Volvo, General Motors, Chrysler, Renault and others have cooperated with it.
SKI installed capacity was 1.7GWh, up 54.3% year-on-year and 21.4% month-on-month. Popular models such as Kia EV, Hyundai IONIQ 5, Hyundai Kona EV (Europe), and Mercedes-Benz GLE PHEV drove the surge in installed capacity.
Samsung SDI's installed capacity was 1GWh, up 25% year-on-year and 11.1% month-on-month. The sales of its supporting models such as Fiat 500, Audi E-tron EV, and Seat Leon PHEV increased, but the sales of Volkswagen e-golf dropped sharply, which offset the overall growth of its installed capacity.
Panasonic's installed capacity in September was 4.3GWh, up 2.4% year-on-year and 53.6% month-on-month. Currently, Panasonic has battery factories in Japan, China and the United States. The current capacity of the US super factory is 35GWh, and it is planning to further expand it to 54GWh. In addition, Panasonic also plans to enter Europe and build its first battery factory in Norway with a capacity of about 38GWh. It is expected that Panasonic's total capacity will reach 160GWh by 2025.
From January to September, the global installed capacity of power batteries was 195.4GWh, up 20.6% from the previous month and 128% from the previous year. The installed capacity of the top ten power battery companies in the world was 182.8GWh, with a market share of 93.6%. The market concentration has further increased, among which CATL, LG, Panasonic, BYD and SKI are firmly in the top five.
CATL, BYD, AVIC Lithium Battery, and Guoxuan High-tech all achieved triple-digit growth year-on-year, which was much higher than the market average, but BYD's market share fell by 1 percentage point to 7.9%. Panasonic and PEVE achieved double-digit growth year-on-year, and their market shares both declined.
LG and SKI grew by more than 120% year-on-year, and Samsung SDI achieved double-digit growth year-on-year. Its market share dropped from 6.1% last year to 4.6% this year.
In conclusion: Chinese companies, led by the "Lithium King" CATL, continue to lead the global power battery market to rapid growth. In September, Chinese company "Lishen" Battery made its first appearance on the list and ranked ninth, while Honeycomb Energy dropped out. AVIC Lithium Battery is catching up with Samsung SDI, with an installed capacity difference of only 0.1 GWh, and is expected to surpass the latter and rank sixth on the list within the year.
