On January 11, Samsung announced its in-vehicle 5G millimeter wave communication system and 5G vehicle networking technology on its official website, demonstrating the application prospects of using 5G to achieve autonomous driving, networking, and enhanced safety.

Samsung launched its first 5G in-vehicle telematics control unit (TCU) in 2019 and has now upgraded to 5G millimeter wave (mmWave).

5G TCU can provide real-time road information to drivers and display high-quality content using high-speed Internet. Samsung has concluded in its research and development that 5G millimeter wave can minimize wireless transmission latency and cover a large number of vehicles at one time, enabling fast communication between vehicles, between vehicles and pedestrians and infrastructure, such as receiving traffic light signals.

5G millimeter waves can provide bandwidths of 100MHz to 1GHz, which is ten times higher than most communication methods running below 6GHz. Samsung has been committed to the research and development of this technology for more than 10 years. The high bandwidth of 5G millimeter waves can transmit large amounts of data, but the implementation of this technology requires complex antenna design and processing chip design to avoid the shortcomings of weak signal penetration and easy obstruction. To this end, Samsung uses array antennas to apply beamforming technology. This method can concentrate the signal in a certain direction, provide a more stable connection, and ensure that it does not drop the line even when the vehicle is driving. Officials said that data transmission can be achieved at a maximum speed of 200km/h.

According to IT Home, Samsung's 5G millimeter wave TCU has 1024 antenna units and supports precise beamforming control. In addition to supporting 5G, the TCU communication unit also supports 2G, 3G, and 4G. The processor's heat dissipation structure has also been optimized to ensure stable operation in extremely low and high temperature environments.
