According to foreign media reports, TeraWatt Technology, a division of US new energy company SF Motors, announced the launch of a 4.5Ah solid-state battery design prototype, and the battery's energy density has reached a record 432Wh/kg (1122Wh/L). Currently, third parties including Japan's TOYO System are conducting verification tests on the battery prototype.

This 4.5Ah next-generation solid-state battery, branded TERA3.0, will be launched to some early users in 2021 and will be generally available in 2022. At the same time, TeraWatt Technology will continue to iterate the TERA3.0 design line and further develop other battery designs, including different battery modes, sizes and energy capacities.

TeraWatt Technology was founded in 2017 as a division of Santa Clara, California-based SF Motors (SERES). SERES’ Chief Technology Officer Dr. Yifan Tang officially unveiled the 4.5Ah solid-state battery prototype at the FISITA PLUS 2019 mobility conference in London, England.

Ken Ogata, senior manager of battery technology at SERES, said that lithium-ion batteries have dominated consumer electronics, automobiles and other fields for the past 30 years, and TERA3.0 will be able to surpass traditional lithium-ion battery solutions. With this solid-state battery, consumers can get longer-lasting, safer and more reliable devices. In addition, in order to use existing lithium-ion battery production equipment to mass-produce TERA3.0 solid-state batteries, the latter has been specially designed to enable the solid-state battery to be adopted on a large scale faster without imposing a huge economic burden on manufacturers and consumers.
