On June 3, 2015, Ford Motor Company of the United States announced that it is studying how to further improve the fuel efficiency of the 1.0L 3-cylinder "EcoBoost" engine. The company has discussed multiple fuel efficiency solutions at its European Research and Innovation Center in Aachen, Germany, one of which is the cylinder intermittent function. In on-road tests, the cylinder intermittent function has improved fuel efficiency by up to 6%.
Ford 1.0 EcoBoost engine
To make the cylinder intermittent function effective over a wide range of engine speeds and loads, a dual-mass flywheel and clutch plate with centrifugal pendulum damper, developed jointly with Germany's Schaeffler Group, are used to reduce noise, vibration and harshness.
The 1.0L EcoBoost engine combines a direct injection system, a turbocharger, and a variable valve timing system to create a downsizing engine with excellent fuel efficiency. One-quarter of Ford vehicles launched in Europe in 2014, such as the Fiesta and Mondeo, are equipped with this engine. In the current engine development, Ford's top priority is to continuously reduce fuel consumption, with the goal of further improving the efficiency of downsizing engines.
