New silicon-based battery improves efficiency of molecular solar energy storage system

In order to improve the utilization rate of solar energy and solve the problem of intermittent solar energy production, an international research team led by Spanish scientists has successfully developed the first device combining silicon-based solar cells with an innovative molecular solar energy storage system (MOST). Solar power generation is a sustainable energy source in theory, but its power generation is intermittent and affected by weather changes and the alternation of day and night. In order to fill the gap between energy production and consumption and ensure power supply, it is crucial to develop an efficient energy storage system.

In the latest research, scientists from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Spain and other institutions have successfully combined silicon-based solar cells with the MOST system. This hybrid device has set a new record for molecular solar energy storage efficiency, with a solar energy utilization efficiency of 14.9%.

The research team pointed out that the MOST system uses organic molecules that change when absorbing high-energy photons such as ultraviolet light, thereby capturing and storing energy. These molecules can also act as filters, blocking photons that would heat the device and reduce the efficiency of the system, cooling the solar cells. Data shows that this innovative design reduces the temperature of the solar cells by 8°C.

In addition, unlike other technologies that rely on rare materials, the MOST system uses conventional elements such as carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, which is more sustainable. The latest method also reduces the impact of traditional energy storage methods such as batteries on the environment. The new hybrid device ensures higher performance and more reliable energy output, laying the foundation for a cleaner and more efficient future energy.
