Canadian Solar Inc. (stock name: Canadian Solar, stock code: 688472)’s energy storage subsidiary e-STORAGE (hereinafter referred to as “Canadian Energy Storage”) has signed a supply contract to provide 1 GWh of DC battery energy storage solutions for DEPCOM Power and Tucson Electric Power (TEP)’s energy storage projects in Arizona, USA.

e-STORAGE will provide SolBank energy storage solutions to the Roadrunner Reserve System project, which will be built by DEPCOM Power. The project has a rated capacity of 200 MW and a total energy storage capacity of 800 MWh (AC). TEP will own and operate the project, which will be one of the largest energy storage systems in the TEP grid and one of the largest energy storage projects in Arizona. Once the project begins operation, it will provide four hours of electricity for approximately 42,000 households. This is the second major project that e-STORAGE will deliver in Arizona since it began delivering energy storage systems to the Papago Storage project (1,200 MWh/1,519 MWh DC) in August this year. The Papago project is scheduled to begin operations at the end of 2024, and the Road Runner Reserve System project is scheduled to begin operations in the summer of 2025.

The Canadian Solar SolBank energy storage system uses one of the safest battery technologies, with LFP batteries, a high-efficiency liquid cooling system and a multi-level fire safety management system, combined with advanced monitoring and control systems and battery balancing systems to ensure safe operation and excellent product performance.

e-STORAGE has deployed more than 3.3 GWh of battery energy storage solutions in China, the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom, with a total installed capacity and contract reserves of 12.4 GWh, which consolidates e-STORAGE's leading position in the global energy storage system integration field. e-STORAGE has two industry-leading manufacturing capabilities, with an annual production capacity of 10 GWh, providing leading energy storage solutions to major markets around the world and actively promoting the development of clean energy.

“We are pleased to be working with DEPCOM Power and Tucson Electric to deliver leading energy storage for the Roadrunner Reserve System project,” said Colin Parkin, President of Canadian Solar’s e-STORAGE business. “This project will support the development of renewable energy in Arizona, meet the state’s growing electricity demand and help it achieve its energy reliability goals.”

Justin Bloch, project president at DEPCOM Power, said: “We are very pleased with Canadian Solar’s SolBank energy storage products and look forward to the development of the Roadrunner Reserve System project. We are honored that this energy storage project will help TEP balance energy supply and demand in Arizona, meet the electricity needs of residents, and continue to add energy storage capacity to the grid.”

“Providing safe, reliable battery energy storage is critical to TEP’s expansion of clean energy resources. We are pleased to be working with DEPCOM Power and Canadian Solar on the Roadrunner Reserve project,” said Eric Bronner, senior director of system integration and operations at TEP.
