Kentucky Governor Beshear announced today that Envision AESC, a world-leading automotive battery technology company, will invest $2 billion to build a 30GWh super factory in Bowling Green, Kentucky, U.S. The project has the potential to be expanded to 40GWh, which can supply batteries for 300,000 electric vehicles per year .
The project will create 2,000 new jobs and position the region as a leader in battery production (adding to the previously announced Ford battery plant).
“We are excited that Envision AESC, a world-leading electric vehicle battery technology company, has chosen Kentucky,” said Governor Beshear. “Envision AESC is making the second-largest economic development investment in Kentucky’s history, investing $2 billion to build a new, state-of-the-art electric vehicle battery Gigafactory in Bowling Green. Even better, this project will create 2,000 jobs for residents of the Warren County area. With this investment, Envision AESC will build a 30GWh plant, increasing Kentucky’s battery production capacity to 116GWh, making the state the largest producer of electric vehicle batteries in the nation.”
It is reported that the energy density of the new generation of batteries will be 30% higher than the current generation.
Additionally, the Gigafactory will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy, partly supplied by on-site facilities and partly purchased from the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).
“We are pleased to be working with the State of Kentucky and Bowling Green as part of the next phase of our battery strategy to power the next generation of electric vehicles in the United States,” said Shoichi Matsumoto, CEO of Envision AESC Group. “This significant investment builds on our commitment to the U.S. market, supports growth in the electrification supply chain, and creates jobs in the region. This commitment brings us one step closer to our goal of producing high-performance, longer-range batteries for global automakers to support the electric vehicle transition.”
The plant covers approximately 3 million square feet (27.87 hectares) and is one of the largest economic projects in the region.
Last month, Mercedes-Benz of Germany announced a strategic partnership with Envision AESC, which will provide it with power battery products and announced plans to build a new power battery factory in the United States.
