More than 350,000 UK homes are expected to have electric vehicle (EV) charging points installed by 2025, according to charging point provider Andersen.

With one million electric vehicles expected to be registered on UK roads by 2025, this will lead to a surge in the number of home chargers.

According to Andersen’s analysis of sales trends, based on current installation rates, 362,270 wall boxes could be installed in driveways and garages across the UK over the next five years.

Currently, there are approximately 120,000 households with installed EV chargers.

Recent changes exempt electric vehicles from benefit-in-kind tax in the current tax year, which will rise to 1% next year, further increasing their appeal to fleet buyers.

Despite the pandemic, both electric cars and plug-in hybrids grew year-on-year in the first quarter, mirroring the global story as one in seven new cars in Europe no longer has an internal combustion engine.

Jerome Faissat, Commercial Director at Andersen, said: “At Andersen, we undoubtedly see electric vehicles as the future. As we move towards a ‘new normal’ post-infection, we have seen clear evidence that people want to change their habits so that they move forward in a more prudent way.

“Over the past three months, pollution in our cities has decreased and we’ve enjoyed the cleanest air we’ve seen in decades, which has inspired many people to rethink the way they get around. We’re seeing people voting with their feet – as they turn to electric cars, bikes or scooters.

“Electrification is more than a moral choice. It’s a choice to embrace the future. Our message is clear: if we work together, we can help encourage people to go electric and make our communities cleaner and safer.
