Global Energy Interconnection and Arab League Initiative Promote Arab Power Grid Interconnection

China Energy Storage Network News: On the 28th, the "Arab Energy Internet and Belt and Road" Construction Forum, co-organized by the Global Energy Internet Development Cooperation Organization and the Arab League, issued an initiative to jointly promote the construction of the Arab energy Internet, accelerate the development of clean energy and energy interconnection.

"Arab countries' energy consumption is highly dependent on fossil energy, and greenhouse gas emissions and environmental pollution are prominent problems. Energy demand will continue to grow in the future, and energy transformation is very urgent." Liu Zhenya, chairman of the Global Energy Interconnection Development Cooperation Organization, said that building an energy internet for Arab countries will bring huge benefits to countries in the region.

He said that Arab countries are among the regions in the world with the richest resources such as solar energy. Accelerating the large-scale development of clean energy can help them fully transform from traditional oil and gas to clean energy.

In this regard, the Global Energy Interconnection Development Cooperation Organization has proposed that, taking into account resource endowments and development conditions, seven large-scale solar energy bases can be developed in North Africa with an installed capacity of 1.1 billion kilowatts; 10 large-scale solar energy bases can be developed in western West Asia with an installed capacity of 2.1 billion kilowatts; and 13 key interconnection projects can be built.

During the forum, the Global Energy Interconnection Development Cooperation Organization signed cooperation agreements with the League of Arab States and the Arab Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.

Li Chengwen, Ambassador for China-Arab Cooperation Forum Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that energy cooperation is an important part of China-Arab strategic cooperation, and hoped that Arab countries could become important partners of the global energy Internet. In the next step, it is suggested to further improve the construction of energy cooperation mechanism under the guidance of China-Arab cooperation to jointly build the "Belt and Road"; and to accelerate cooperation in new energy projects under the guidance of clean substitution and electric energy substitution.

The Global Energy Interconnection Development Cooperation Organization was established in March 2016. It is the first international energy organization initiated by my country and has become a new multilateral energy cooperation platform. At present, the cooperation organization has released the nine vertical and nine horizontal backbone grids of the Global Energy Interconnection. This year, it will release the energy interconnection plans and programs for Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia and Africa.
