International Solar Photovoltaic Network: Madagascar President Hery Rajaonarimampianina has commissioned a 20MW solar power plant to be built by French developer Green Yellow in the Ambohipihaonana district.
Construction of the project began in late 2016. The €25 million farm will supply electricity to local utility Jirama under a long-term PPA agreement. The project was initially expected to be completed in November 2017.
The Ambohipihaonana project will reduce the cost of electricity in the region, which is about 480 MGA ($0.16) per kilowatt-hour. The country is still dominated by thermal power stations (406MW) and hydroelectric power stations (162MW).
The World Bank is supporting Madagascar’s solar energy initiatives under the Scaling Solar program. The International Finance Corporation signed an agreement with the Madagascar government in March 2016 to collaborate on the design and tendering of privately developed grid-connected solar power.
The International Finance Corporation says the 30-40MW solar project planned by the Madagascar government will help address power outages and reduce the cost of electricity generation in Jirama.
