General Electric (NYSE: GE) today announced an energy storage platform called Reservoir, which will serve as a building block for modular systems starting with a 1.2MW/4MWh unit.

The product has received pre-release commitments of 20MW/80MWh.

GE said in a statement that the platform is designed to help meet the rapidly changing needs of the energy industry as the energy storage market gains momentum. It is suitable for decentralized grids and remote locations and can help customers integrate higher levels of renewable energy, improve grid operations and support more distributed generation. By improving asset utilization and system management, the company said customers can also realize new revenue opportunities and cost savings.
