Samsung launched its 3nm chip production line at the end of June and began producing chipsets for Bitcoin miners on the new 3nm GAA manufacturing process. Although Samsung will eventually use the 3nm process to produce smartphone chipsets, the current trial run still provides chips for Bitcoin miners.
Recently, Dr. Siyoung Choi, president of Samsung Foundry, released a new report. The report shows that Samsung's mining chipsets based on 3nm are about 23-45% more energy-efficient than previously produced chipsets. Market observers estimate that under the 3nm process technology, the energy consumption of chips will be reduced significantly, which may significantly reduce the carbon emissions associated with Bitcoin mining.
In addition to discussing the energy benefits of switching to 3nm manufacturing, Dr. Siyoung Choi also talked about the future of Samsung Foundry, specifically the 2nm process technology. He said that 3nm manufacturing technology will remain in the leading position in the next few years. After 3nm is 2nm, Samsung Foundry should be able to produce chipsets at the 2nm node by the end of 2025. In other words, this is no change compared to the company's previously released plan.
Samsung's foundry competitor TSMC hopes to start mass production of 3nm chips in the second half of 2022. Like Samsung, TSMC also aims to produce 2nm chips in 2025.
