The Micro-Opto-Electromechanical Systems Research Department of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (under preparation) and the School of Energy of Huazhong University of Science and Technology have cooperated to package the world's highest-power LED light source and developed a packaging technology with China's independent intellectual property rights, which is at the leading level internationally.

It is said that after many modifications to the design and continuous reference to advanced packaging technologies at home and abroad, the above research team completed the packaging of the world's highest power LED light source of 1,500 watts. After being lit for many long periods of time, the performance of the light source is stable and meets the lighting function requirements. After testing, the packaging technology effectively reduces the LED junction temperature, improves the light source's light output effect, improves the light source's reliability, solves the shortcomings of LED light sources such as large size, insufficient heat dissipation capacity, and poor light output, and can provide a higher heat dissipation solution per unit area.

LED technology refers to the technology of using the electroluminescent properties of semiconductor materials to make them into semiconductor light-emitting diodes (LEDs) suitable for lighting and their application lamps. In recent years, foreign LED technology and industry have developed rapidly, and related companies in Japan, the United States, Germany and other countries have formed a high degree of technical monopoly.

Since the start of the research on power LED packaging technology in 2002, the Micro-Opto-Mechanical Systems Research Department of Wuhan National Laboratory for Optoelectronics (under preparation) has established a multidisciplinary research team covering optics, thermal, electrical, material and mechanical aspects. Through years of accumulation, the research department has mastered the core technology of LED packaging. In July 2006, the research team successfully packaged a 220-watt LED light source with the highest power in China, and exhibited it at the Shenzhen Semiconductor Lighting Forum and Exhibition from July 12 to 14, which attracted wide attention from the Ministry of Science and Technology of China, domestic and foreign scholars and manufacturers.

Data shows that LED light sources save 87% more electricity than incandescent lamps and 50% more electricity than fluorescent lamps, and their lifespan is 20 to 30 times longer than incandescent lamps and 10 times longer than fluorescent lamps. LED light sources are considered the best way to save electricity and reduce energy consumption because of their unique advantages such as energy saving, environmental protection, long life, safety, fast response, small size, rich colors, and controllability.
