Power Integrations releases InnoSwitch3-PD reference design for ultra-compact USB Type C, PD + PPS adapters
DER-937 is a 100W USB PD charger using a highly integrated boost PFC and GaN flyback switcher IC design, using only 117 components in total
SAN JOSE, Calif., Nov. 9, 2021 – Power Integrations (Nasdaq: POWI), a leader in high-voltage integrated circuits for energy-efficient power conversion, today announced a new USB PD charger reference design that delivers high performance with a minimal component count. Called DER-937, the charger reference design uses Power Integrations’ new InnoSwitch™ 3-PDPowiGaN™ flyback switcher IC and HiperPFS™-4 PFC controller IC, using only 117 components to achieve a 100W USB PD 3.0 + digitally controlled power supply (PPS) with power factor correction (PFC). The DER-937 report includes power supply specifications, circuit schematics, PCB layout, bill of materials, detailed core specifications, and performance data.
Comments Aditya Kulkarni, senior product marketing engineer at Power Integrations: “This USB PD charger design achieves efficiency levels of over 93%, including the input, PFC and flyback stages. No-load performance is also excellent, requiring less than 40mW of no-load input power at 230VAC. The design’s BOM component count is about half that of conventional designs, saving space and reducing design time. This greatly simplifies component sourcing for both original equipment and off-the-shelf manufacturers who are mass-producing ultra-thin, ultra-compact chargers.”
DER-937 uses two recently launched ICs from Power Integrations. The InnoSwitch3-PD INN3870C quasi-resonant offline flyback switcher IC integrates USB Type C and USB PD controllers, high-voltage PowiGaN gallium nitride switches, synchronous rectification and FluxLink™ feedback circuitry. The HiperPFS-4 PFS7628C PFC controller IC integrates a Qspeed™ low reverse recovery charge (Qrr) boost diode to deliver over 98% efficiency across the entire load range.
