April 9, 2021 - STMicroelectronics has expanded its high-efficiency power converter series with the launch of the L6981 synchronous step-down regulator, which integrates power components, feedback circuits and safety functions on a single chip to simplify power supply design.
The L6981 converter has a rated maximum output current of 1.5A and a typical conversion efficiency of 90% at full load. Two models are available, which are optimized for light load efficiency and noise performance respectively.
The L6981C is designed for low-current applications and uses a pulse skipping mode to maximize light-load conversion efficiency and extend the battery life of battery-powered devices, while the L6981N focuses on optimizing light-load noise performance, using a permanent PWM (pulse width modulation) mode and a constant switching frequency to minimize light-load voltage ripple.
Both products are compatible with 3.5V-38V input voltage and are suitable for 24V industrial DC bus power supplies, 12V and 24V battery-powered equipment, HVAC air conditioning power supplies, decentralized smart nodes, smart sensors and always-on applications. The output voltage is adjustable from 0.85V to the input voltage value by using an external resistor.
The functions integrated on the chip include high-side and low-side NMOS power transistors, feedback loop compensation, overvoltage protection, thermal protection, as well as soft-start circuit and enable pin. Among them, the soft-start circuit can limit the inrush current and ensure a constant output voltage rise rate; the enable pin allows power-on/power-off sequencing and allows a synchronous clock signal to be applied to the L6981N low-noise converter. The L6981 is included in STMicroelectronics' 10-year product life plan and is committed to long-term supply.
The STEVAL-L6981CDR low-current converter evaluation board and the STEVAL-L6981NDR low-noise converter evaluation board help power designers speed up device selection.
The L6981 is in production now and is available in the rugged, market-proven SO8L package.
