There are many types of indoor lighting spaces, but when it comes to hotel space lighting , it is definitely a relatively complex type.

It includes the warmth of home, the magnificence of social places, the comfort of dining spaces, the versatility of meeting places, and the seclusion and relaxation of leisure spaces. Therefore, the proportion of designers engaged in hotel lighting is much smaller than that of other types.

Through the following topics, we hope to unveil the mystery of hotel lighting and make everyone have a deeper understanding and interest in hotel lighting. The following topics are mainly international five-star hotels.

The real boss - hotel style positioning and differentiation

When talking about hotel lighting design, we must mention the hotel management company. Because besides the owner, he has the power of life and death over whether to use you. He can even veto the owner's decision to use you as a lighting designer. The reason? "You are not on the hotel's recommended list." Is it that simple? Yes, it is that simple. The reason is that the hotel management company hopes to control the quality of the entire design in this way. Therefore, the hotel group's recommended list is equivalent to entering the finals, and whether it is yours in the end is just a matter of seconds.

The hotel's own geographical environment, service objects, business strategy and other factors will have a huge impact on the hotel's positioning, star rating, style definition, etc. These decisions are all related to the hotel management company. All designs also need to be implemented according to the design standards set by the hotel management company. In principle, only those who pass the final assessment are eligible to hang the hotel brand of these companies.

Common management companies include: InterContinental, Crowne Plaza, Hotel Indigo, Holiday Inn, Holiday Inn Express, etc. under IHG; The Luxury Collection, St. Regis, W, Westin, Le Meridien, Sheraton, Four Points, etc. under Starwood. In addition, there are Marriott, Hilton, Accor, Carlson Hotel Worldwide, etc. different hotel management groups.

They manage different types of hotels, including luxury, holiday and leisure, business, economy, etc., covering different customer sources of high, middle and low classes.

One carrot, one hole – space types and distinctions

The hotel provides a temporary place for travelers to stay, a place to eat when hungry, a place to hold meetings in order not to waste time or convenience, and a place to relax after hard work... etc. Due to actual usage needs, the hotel has developed other service spaces besides guest rooms, including the following five categories:

  1. Reception service area - lobby, lobby bar, rest and waiting area, etc.

  2. Business service area - banquet hall (multi-function hall), lobby, various types of meeting rooms, business center, etc.

  3. Dining and leisure area - Chinese restaurant, Western restaurant, all-day restaurant, specialty restaurant, wine bar, cigar bar, etc.

  4. Entertainment and leisure area - gym, swimming pool, SPA, public toilets, etc.

  5. Traffic flow area - public elevator hall, public walkways, etc.

Communication and understanding – Design scope and type

"Our hotel covers an area of only 20,000 square meters and has only 100 guest rooms. Shouldn't the design fee be lower than that of a general standard five-star hotel?" This is a question we often encounter among the owners we come into contact with.

Generally speaking, the area of an urban five-star hotel is about 40,000 to 50,000 square meters, but this is not our actual design scope.

The main space of lighting design includes the front-of-house public area (FOH) and the representative apartment types of the guest room level, the public corridor and the standard practice of the elevator hall. Therefore, the design scope of the public area excluding the area occupied by the back-of-house (BOH) is about 9,000 square meters to 12,000 square meters. Although the area of the guest room level is about 10,000 square meters to 20,000 square meters, according to the principle of "standard practice", the actual design scope is up to 3,000 square meters. This is the point that the owner is not clear about, and both parties need to communicate clearly before designing.

Standing on the ground and facing the sky – Space type and height

The hotel has defined the above spaces based on usage requirements. The defined spaces have different requirements and considerations in terms of volume and height. "Height" has become a very important consideration in lighting design.

Figure: Ceiling heights of different types of spaces in a hotel.

Why does good lighting design require the coordination of corresponding lamps?

Taking the height of the above-mentioned different types of spaces as an example, the common five-star hotel space height is generally between 2.5 meters and 10 meters. This 7 to 8 meter difference also affects the direction of lighting design and product selection.

Each space must meet the illumination requirements of the hotel management company. The higher the ceiling, the higher the requirements for the efficiency and power of the lamps, and the size of the lamps will also be much larger.

Why? The light source is large, the light angle and heat dissipation requirements are important factors that affect the size of the lamp.

We will continue to present to you topics such as how to choose lamps and how to determine the power of light sources in the future.
