We should have noticed that home projectors have developed very rapidly in the past two years, and more and more projector vendors have also expanded their business to the home market. Using projectors as display devices, users can achieve a large screen of more than 100 inches at home, and with a 5.1-channel home theater system, everyone can easily enjoy the shocking effects of a movie theater. Considering these, if LED light sources can be combined with home projectors, it is likely to be a promising development.
The full English name of LED is Light Emitting Diode, which is what we usually call light-emitting diode. The author mainly engaged in research in this area in school. In layman's terms, LED is the carrier injected into the PN junction. After the minority carriers and the majority carriers recombine, they release energy in the form of light, thus achieving electroluminescence.
LED's notable features are high photoelectric conversion efficiency, high color saturation, small size, vibration resistance, impact resistance, no toxic substances, low voltage power supply, human safety, long life, etc. In daily life, it is mainly used in anti-fog lighting, indicator lights, etc. At present, traditional projectors use UHE, UHP and other bulbs, which have high light efficiency and brightness, but are not conducive to system heat dissipation, and their life is relatively short.
If the projector uses LED light source, what advantages will it have? First of all, the application of LED light source can open up a new way for the miniaturization of the projector body. Due to the small size of LED light source, it is very suitable for the development of more compact projector components, making the projection product more portable; moreover, LED is a true cold light source, and the working process does not generate a lot of heat like traditional bulbs, which is very beneficial to the heat dissipation of projection products and easier to control noise; LED light source has a long life, which means that the projector does not need to replace the bulb as frequently as before, which increases the cost of later use.
In addition, color range is also an important performance indicator for measuring projectors. We know that traditional light source projectors, especially DLP products, require a color wheel for color separation due to their limited light source spectrum range. The speed of the color wheel has a great impact on color performance. Although LCD products do not require a color wheel for color separation and their color performance is much better than DLP, it is still not satisfactory. According to data provided by authoritative organizations, the color gamut range of traditional light source projector products is only about 65% of NTSC, and there are many color gaps.
The emergence of LED light sources can solve this problem very well, and white LED and RGB three-primary color light sources are also very suitable for use in projectors. Among them, the pure color of the RGB three-color LED light source is very high, and the three-color light emitters take turns to emit light in time sequence, and its color gamut range can easily reach more than 100%. Therefore, the application of LED light sources can make the color reproduction effect of the projector more outstanding.
Finally, traditional light sources contain mercury, which is harmful to the human body. Although the content is very low, it still causes more or less harm to the human body. LED light sources do not contain any elements that are harmful to the human body. In this sense, LED is more environmentally friendly.
However, compared with traditional bulbs, LED light sources have the disadvantages of difficult cost control and insufficient brightness. However, no new thing is smooth sailing when it is first born. As the majority of projection manufacturers pay more and more attention to it and gradually increase the improvement efforts, the performance of LED light sources has been greatly improved over the years. Compared with the old model in 2005, today's LED light sources have better luminous efficiency, greater power, better luminous angle and more outstanding monochromatic luminous performance, and have also greatly improved the fatal luminous brightness. The new LED light source also realizes AC and DC dual use, which can better improve thermal management. All of these make the application of LED light sources in projection products more realistic, which also provides a solid foundation for the development of the pocket projection market.
We know that the application of LED light sources in flat-panel TVs has been relatively mature, and a large number of experiments have also proved that LED light sources will bring more perfect color performance to projectors. However, the application of LED light sources in projectors is still in its early stages and needs further development.
