The US Patent and Trademark Office recently published several patents granted to Apple, one of which is about a new base device, with which users can wirelessly charge their iOS devices by placing them directly above or next to them. This new base integrates re-radiating antennas to enhance wireless signal integrity, inductive charge wires, and wireless or optical data connections.
The most noteworthy part of this patent is its inductive charging mechanism: the base housing is designed to allow users to charge the battery of the handheld device through an inductive charge matching mechanism, and integrate a re-radiating antenna to complete the wireless communication. The inductive charge matching mechanism and the receiving port are connected by wires.
Although Apple has not yet used an inductive charging dock in its iOS devices, Palm has previously used such a dock, called Touchstone, in its first-generation Pre smartphone.
In addition, the US Patent and Trademark Office also announced that Apple has obtained another 27 patents, including reading lists, rotating and resizing content on multi-touch devices. The patent documents show that Apple has submitted the application documents for this patent in 2008. After such a long review, does this mean that Apple is seriously considering using an inductive charging charger base on iOS devices?
