The ST7580 is a flexible power line networking system-on-chip combining a high performing PHY processor core and a protocol controller with a fully integrated analog front end (AFE) and line driver for a scalable future-proof, cost effective, single chip, narrow-band power line communication solution. Made using multi-power technology with a high-performance PHY processor core and a protocol controller, fully integrated analog front end (AFE) and line driver, B-FSK modulation rate up to 9.6 kbps, B-PSK, Q-PSK and 8-PSK modulation rate up to 28.8 kbps, two-way working mode, mainly used in smart metering, street lighting control and command and control network. This article introduces the main features of
the ST7580, block diagram, functional system block diagram and the main features of the ST7580 power line modem demonstration board, typical application environment, circuit diagram and bill of materials
. state-of-the-art VLSI CMOS lithography, the ST7580 is based on dual digital core architecture (a PHY processor engine and a protocol controller core) to guarantee outstanding communication performance with a high level of flexibility for either open standards or customized implementations.
A HW 128-bit AES encryption block with customizable key management is available on chip when secure communication is requested.
The on-chip analog front end analog featuring digital and digital to analog conversion, automatic gain control, plus the integrated power amplifier delivered up to 1 A RMS output current makes the ST7580 a unique system-on-chip for power line communication. Line coupling network design is also simplified, leading to a very low cost BOM. Robust and performing operations are guaranteed while keeping power consumption and signal distortion levels very low; this makes the ST7580 an ideal platform for the most stringent application requirements and regulatory standards compliance.

ST7580 power line modem demonstration kit graphical user interface (GUI)
The “ST7580 GUI” is a software tool that allows one or more ST power line modem (PLM)demonstration boards to be interfaced with a personal computer (PC). Only PLM demonstration boards equipped with the ST7580 device are supported.
When using the ST7580 GUI the user has complete control of the ST7580 device, having access to all its registers and functions described in [2].
The typical application environment consists of an ST7580 GUI running on a PC and communicating through a USB connection with a PLM demonstration kit equipped with the ST7580 product, such as the EVALKITST7580-1 (consisting of an EVALST7580-1 modem board and an EVLALTAIR900-M1 power supply board).
图3.ST7580典型应用环境
The ST7580 reference design has been realized as a useful tool that exploits the performance capability of the ST7580 power line networking system-on-chip. With this reference design, it is possible to evaluate, directly on the power line, the transmitting and receiving performance of a power line communication node based on the ST7580 device.
The line coupling interface is designed to allow the ST7580 device to transmit and receive on the AC mains line using the available FSK and PSK modes within the European CENELEC EN50065-1 standard A band, specified for automatic meter reading (AMR) applications [5]. The circuit has been designed to be easily adapted to different frequency bands and application environments with very few modifications.
An STM32 microcontroller has been included in the reference design to make it more flexible and suitable for use as a standalone smart PLC node.
