Stanley Electric has developed a glass-encapsulated UV LED and exhibited it at CEATEC JAPAN 2010.

Since inorganic materials are used as packaging materials, the performance degradation caused by ultraviolet rays is small, and the component life is extended compared to when using resin materials. Stanley Electric hopes to develop applications in harsh environments (such as high temperature and high humidity) where LEDs could not be used before. The appearance adopts the shape of installing ultraviolet LED chips on the filament part of the light bulb and then adding a glass cover.

According to Stanley Electric, the area inside the glass cover, i.e. around the UV LED chip, is in a vacuum state.

The wavelength of light emission is 375nm. The forward current is 20mA and the forward voltage is 3.3V. The light output power is 6mW. According to Stanley Electric, although it is still in the development stage, the technology has been introduced to customers. In addition to the prototype with ultraviolet LED chips installed, the prototype with red, green and blue LED chips installed was also exhibited.
