We are fortunate to live in an
era of
display
technology revolution.
Since the discovery of organic electroluminescence
by
Deng Qingyun
, a Chinese researcher at Kodak in 1979,
OLED
technology has made great progress. Scientists have regarded it as the star of future display technology because the performance of OLED far exceeds that of
LCD
and PDP.
However, this technology still has many difficulties. From the perspective of development, I think the following problems of OLED technology need to be solved urgently:
1. Size problem: According to
the
driving
method, small molecule OLED can be divided into PM-OLED and AM-OLED. Passive OLED cannot be made larger in size, while active OLED can be made into a certain large-size
panel
. Its TFT substrate generally has three types: non-
crystalline silicon
, low-temperature
polycrystalline silicon
and OFTT. At present, large-size
AMOLED
mainly uses a-Si as TFT substrate, and a-Si-TFT itself has problems such as threshold voltage drift and self-attenuation, which leads to uneven panel
brightness
, which becomes the biggest obstacle to its mass production.
2. Lifespan problem: The lifespan of mobile phone sub-screens currently seen on the market is generally around 3000~5000 hours, which can meet the lifespan requirements for mobile phones, but it is far from enough for TV terminal displays. Of course, with the development of material purification technology, the lifespan problem will be gradually solved.
3. Process problem: At present, the OLED mass production process is not very mature, and the product yield is not high. Samsung, Pioneer, and ReTron are the largest suppliers of OLED products, but their products are limited to small-sized mobile phone panels, mp3 panels, digital camera panels, and other fields.
4. Intellectual property issues: The core patents of small molecule OLED are mainly held by Kodak, and the company is not active in granting intellectual property rights, which has caused certain difficulties for OLED manufacturers. In this regard, CDT's polymer P
LED
technology is better than Kodak's. In addition, many experts believe that PLED using inkjet printing technology has great inherent advantages in large sizes, and the current mass production technology is not mature.
5. Cost issues: Since the current TFT-
IC
driver cannot replace the OLED dedicated IC, the cost has increased.
6. Opportunities for domestic companies: There is such a data that Samsung's TFT
display screen
sales in the first quarter of 2004 were 30 billion. This figure is equivalent to the annual gross output value of a large domestic electronic company. Therefore, if domestic companies want to develop, they must get involved in the high-end component industry. Due to technical issues, I think it is more appropriate to adopt the method of cooperation with foreign capital. Take advantage of our market advantages and the other party's technical advantages. In the field of OLED, I prefer to cooperate with Korean companies rather than Japanese companies. Most Korean companies are friendly to China, while Japanese companies are on guard against us in high technology.
In short, any technology will encounter setbacks in the early stages of development, which depends on the guidance and positioning of investors.
TFT-LCD
is a good example. In fact, if PDP overcomes some technical problems, it will also achieve great development. It is precisely because of this lack of positioning that PDP can only succumb to LCD.
