Introduction to Martindale Abrasion and Pilling Tester

The fabric to be tested is installed in the upper sample fixture and rubbed against the abrasive installed on the grinding table. The friction track is a Lissajous figure. After the friction times are set, the pilling is evaluated or the number of abrasions of the sample is recorded.

Instrument Features

The unique design allows the test to be set up and checked without picking up the top guide. The instrument can count the number of rubs for each sample and the total number of rubs for the preset test. The instrument has a link function that allows the user to do different tests at the same time. The instrument is equipped with a full set of sample grips and optional loading blocks to ensure that the correct pressure is applied to the test fabric.

Instrument Calibration

After using it for a while, to confirm whether the instrument is set correctly, check the instrument with a pure black printed fabric. Run it normally for 7,000 times and check the color change of the sample. If it is uneven, the instrument is not set correctly and the settings listed above should be checked. It is recommended to check it regularly according to the usage. If the laboratory is doing abrasion and quality wear experiments, use two reference cloths to test at intervals until the end of the experiment. If the abrasion is uneven, it is recommended to check the parallelism of the grinding table.

Drive shaft position

Changing the type of motion involves changing one or more of the drive shaft blocks on the drive crank. First make sure the instrument is stationary. Remove the specimen grip (if fitted) and the guide plate. Move the drive shaft blocks to the appropriate new position. For the abrasion test: the three drive shaft blocks must be in position A. For the pilling test: the three drive shaft blocks must be in position B. For the straight line test: the middle drive shaft block is in position B and the two edge drive shaft blocks are in position A.

Carefully place the guide plate on the instrument and make sure it is in the right position. Clamping of the specimen and related test accessories In the wear resistance test, first place the standard felt on the grinding table, then place the standard friction fabric, and finally clamp it with the clamping ring. For the pilling test, the grinding table is covered with the first layer of standard felt and the second layer with the specimen. When the fixture for the abrasion test is used to hold the specimen, a piece of standard foam should be placed, and the specimen is at the bottom for the abrasion test. Note: The felt can be used 100,000 times or until it hardens.

The standard abrasive cloth should be changed for each test. The polyurethane foam pad should be changed for each test. When all the grinding tables and specimen holders are installed, place the specimen holder on the grinding table. Put the pin through the bearing and place it on the specimen holder. According to the number of runs set in part 4, turn on the power and start the experiment. Sample preparation - pilling (Note: adjust the instrument settings if this operation has not been done before) After marking the abrasive and specimen conditioning, cut the required number of specimens with a diameter of 140mm, two sets of sample cutters, one for the pilling table and the other for the specimen holder.

Place the pilling auxiliary sample loading device on the workbench, with the small size placed at the bottom. The wear-resistant sample clamping ring is placed on the outside of the auxiliary sample loading device. Place the 140mm diameter aluminum alloy fixture on the top of the auxiliary sample loading device. The excess part of the edge hangs outside. Place the loading block with a diameter of 90mm on the top of the auxiliary sample loading device. Place the sample fixture on the felt. Carefully roll the rubber ring up to the recess of the aluminum alloy fixture plate. Remove the sample fixture.

Repeat the above steps to load the sample on each grinding table and fixture. Make sure the readings of all stations are zero, then start the experiment with the preset number of times. The end point of the experiment will be different depending on the label.
