Las Vegas – January 5, 2022 – OmniVision, a global leader in semiconductor solutions for advanced digital imaging, analog, touch and display technologies, and Tobii, a global leader in eye tracking technology, today announced that they will collaborate to advance Metaverse vision solutions. The jointly developed eye tracking reference design is based on OmniVision’s industry-leading BSI global shutter (GS) sensor family, helping XR device manufacturers (XR OEMs) accelerate time to market for high-demand XR consumer electronics products.

According to MarketsandMarkets, the eye tracking market is expected to more than double from 2020 to 2025 , from $368 million to $1.098 billion, a compound annual growth rate of 24.5%. The increasing application of eye tracking technology in consumer electronics and healthcare are two important markets driving the growth of eye tracking technology.

“To meet this growing demand, integrated hardware/software solutions are needed to accelerate time to market,” said Devang Patel, director of IoT/Emerging Applications at OmniVision. “We have a long-standing relationship with Tobii and chose to work with them to address this need. Our joint solution brings together a range of leading technologies, OmniVision’s advanced sensor technology and Tobii’s best-in-class eye tracking solutions, to create a system that can be directly integrated into AR, VR and MR products and any other application that requires a high-performance, lightweight eye tracking solution.”

“Eye tracking involves understanding the user’s attention, which we call attention computing, and is critical to human communication and interaction,” said Johan Hellqvist, Vice President of XR at Tobii. “With our eye tracking technology, we are focusing on the Metaverse as we work with ecosystem partners to create value for users. We are committed to co-innovating with partners like OmniVision to create superior solutions that help VR, AR and MR manufacturers design and manufacture versatile, high-performance VR, AR and MR headsets.”

This is the industry's first and only eye tracking reference design based on the industry-leading BSI global shutter (GS) sensor family . The new solution uses OmniVision's ultra-small camera module OC0TA for eye tracking, while also offering new high-performance advantages in near-infrared (NIR) and shutter efficiency. Integrated camera modules with eye tracking capabilities significantly reduce the development time of AR, VR and MR consumer products.
