According to the EurekAlert website of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology has developed a smart sensor and real-time remote monitoring system that can detect signs of ground or structural collapse.

The development of sensors and systems began with the search for a way to instantaneously sense the collapse of a slope or building caused by ground movement, allowing for an immediate response. This sensor turns on an LED warning light when it detects ground movement. Existing systems for measuring ground motion are not widely used because they are often only available to experts, are costly and difficult to master.

The sensors can be easily installed in areas prone to collapse, 1-2 meters apart, and detect slope changes as small as 0.03°. Once signs of collapse are sensed, the sensor will immediately turn on the LED light to issue a warning. The sensor adopts high-efficiency light transmission lens technology, so the LED alarm is visible to the naked eye no matter day or night, even within a distance of 100 meters. When warning lights come on, rescuers can remotely understand the situation in the affected area in real time, which helps them take measures such as sharing the progress of the collapse with relevant authorities.

The new sensors are easier to install and less expensive than existing sensors, with installation and operating costs reduced by more than 50%. What's more, thanks to their ultra-low power consumption, they can run for nearly a year without needing to replace the battery. These sensors are expected to be widely used in areas with significant seasonal changes because they can operate even in extreme temperatures ranging from -30°C to 80°C.

To prevent false alarms, algorithms in the sensors analyze and assess risks based on conditions at the monitored location. Sensors can be used on construction sites, public works, tunnel projects, dilapidated and historic buildings, as well as in mines, underground structures, landslide-prone areas, and more.

Why does a multimeter see a PWM signal when measuring a sensor using the voltage range?
There is a position sensor that measures position changes. When the output signal of the sensor is measured with the voltage range of a multimeter, the result shows an analog signal, that is, the position and the signal output are linearly related. However, when the output signal of the sensor is measured with an osci
