On the morning of March 23, the US government announced that IBM will work with the White House to develop a large amount of supercomputing capabilities to help researchers prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.
The U.S. government said the tech company has been working on a project with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and the U.S. Department of Energy "through joint initiatives." The supercomputers will be used to help researchers deploy predictive models to analyze the course of the infectious disease and potential drugs or possible vaccines.
The project will evaluate research proposals from around the world and allocate supercomputing resources to those projects that will have the greatest immediate impact. All researchers involved will have access to these resources.
IBM's Summit supercomputer system has helped the U.S. Department of Energy identify drug ingredients that have the potential to fight the new coronavirus.
Other partners in the joint project include NASA, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and Los Alamos National Laboratories, as well as the National Science Foundation.
