Features of the three new TMS320 DSP families
1. TMS320C2000 - the best DSP for control, which can replace the old 'C1X and 'C2X. Now there are two trends:
(1) C20X 16-bit fixed-point DSP, with a speed of 20 MIPS. Its main uses are telephones, digital cameras, vending machines, etc. Among them: 'F206 has flash memory and is priced from US$5 to US$17.
(2) C24X 16-bit fixed-point DSP, with a speed of 20 MIPS, is used for digital motor control, industrial automation, power conversion systems, air conditioning, etc., with a price ranging from US$4 to US$18.
2. TMS320C5000 - low power, high performance DSP, 16-bit fixed point, speed 40-200 MIPS. Main applications are wired and wireless communications, IP, portable information systems, pagers, hearing aids, etc. Price: $5-75.
At present, there are three new members in the C5000 series. One is the 'C5402, which is a low-cost DSP with a target price of $5 per chip (50K batches), a speed of 100MIPS, a slightly smaller on-chip storage space, 16K RAM, and 4K ROM. The main application objects are wireless modems, new generation PDAs, Internet phones and other telephone systems, as well as consumer electronic products.
The second is C5420, which has two DSP cores, a speed of 200MIPS, 200K on-chip RAM, and a power consumption of 0.32mA/MIPS. When working at full speed of 200MIPS, it does not exceed 120mW, making it the DSP with the lowest power consumption in the industry. 'C5420 is the most integrated fixed-point DSP today, suitable for multi-channel base stations, servers, modems, telephone systems and other occasions that require high performance, low power consumption and small size.
The third is C5416, which is the first of TI's 0.15μm devices, with a speed of 160MIPS, three multi-channel buffered serial ports (McBSPs), which can be directly connected to T1 or E1 lines without external logic circuits, and has 128K on-chip RAM. Application objects are VoIP, communication servers, PBX (private branch exchange) and computer telephone systems.
3. TMS320C6000 - This is a high-performance DSP launched by TI in February 1997. It combines all the advantages of current DSPs and has the best cost-effectiveness and low power consumption. The 'C6000 series is divided into two categories: fixed-point and floating-point.
(1) 'C62XX 16-bit fixed-point DSP, with a speed of 1200 to 2000 MIPS, is used in wireless base stations, ADSL modems, network systems, central office switches, digital audio broadcasting equipment, etc. The price ranges from US$21 to US$224.
(2) 'C67XX 32-bit floating-point DSP, with a speed of 1Gflops, is used for base station digital beamforming, medical image processing, speech recognition, 3-D graphics, etc., and the price ranges from US$109 to US$233.
C6000 is developing in two directions: one is to pursue higher performance, and the other is to develop towards lower cost while maintaining high performance. The former, such as the fixed-point 'C6202, can reach a speed of 2000MIPS, and the latter, such as the fixed-point 'C6211, is only 25 US dollars, and the floating-point 'C6711 is only 20 US dollars.
In the old TI DSP series, the floating-point 'C30 is still the main product of TI, so its price is not increased every year like other old series. TI is still improving the performance of this model and manufacturing low-cost models, such as the recently launched 'C33, which uses 0.18μm manufacturing process, has 1MRAM, and a speed of 120Mflops, which is twice that of the old products, and the price is only 5 US dollars. The higher speed of 150Mflops is 8 US dollars. The 'C33 is code-compatible with other 'C3X devices, so users can protect their software environment and reduce development time when they switch to new devices.
