Energy demand is growing very fast, and it is expected that by 2030, people's demand for energy will increase by more than 30% [1]. The world plans to reduce total carbon dioxide emissions by 45% between 2010 and 2050, thereby achieving the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees [2]. China, Europe and the United States together account for more than 50% of global emissions. At the national level, there is a clear path and direction to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality by 2050 (China plans to achieve it by 2060) [3]. At the corporate level, semiconductor technology leaders like ST play an important role in providing solutions and innovative technologies.
There is a strong demand for semiconductor products in the global transmission and energy storage fields. ST has infrastructure application solutions such as charging stations, data centers, smart homes, smart buildings, and smart cities. Among them, the ST KNX energy management system is a proactive way to help carbon neutrality. Its goal is to proactively determine whether new energy needs to be consumed or stored, and to provide the most optimized energy use based on user needs.
KNX Smart Charging Pile Solution
KNX Energy Management
System
can track energy generation and consumption, manage static and dynamic loads, and seamlessly connect devices from different manufacturers/brands. For example, when the system energy input source or the number of working charging piles changes, the current of each charging pile will be automatically adjusted according to the optimized energy strategy. Through KNX ETS configuration, the system can easily integrate multiple charging piles from different manufacturers into the same KNX network, thereby achieving dynamic coordination of multiple machines, unified management of efficient energy management strategies, and creating an open and sustainable energy management platform.

The ST KNX smart charging pile is realized by integrating ST's KNX solution on the basis of traditional charging piles. The solution mainly uses STKNX transceivers, SMAJ40CA TVS tubes, STM32G070, STISO621 isolation devices and ST25R3916 NFC card reader chips. Through the standard KNX interface, KNX charging piles of different types and manufacturers can be interconnected to form a large system that can accommodate more than 60,000 KNX devices. It can also be directly connected to the KNX energy management system to realize real-time monitoring of each charging pile, and adjust the charging current, charging time, charging priority and timed charging settings in real time and dynamically according to the system's power supply capacity and charging needs. The user's charging card identity recognition and dynamic management are realized through ST25R3916. KNX data encryption and KNX IP security mechanisms ensure safe and reliable communication between the entire KNX charging system and the energy management system.
KNX Smart Home/Building Automation
As a global standard, KNX is highly compatible, interoperable and has a large number of suppliers, making it very suitable for efficient building energy systems.
The STKNX energy management system adopts the global KNX communication standard to help achieve a smarter and greener future.
STMicroelectronics Automation Technology Innovation Center (ACC) has been committed to the research and development of carbon neutrality and sustainable energy management solutions, and looks forward to working with potential new energy system integrators and electric vehicle charging equipment manufacturers in the market, equipped with ST KNX energy management technology concepts, to lead the future towards a more convenient, safer and more energy-efficient living space.
In addition to electric vehicle charging management solutions, STKNX smart energy management system also includes a comprehensive smart home/building automation scope. KNX smart home/building automation solutions are known for their seamless connection and unified control of lighting, curtains, temperature, appliances and energy use. The main advantage of the KNX protocol is that it can be easily integrated into the existing IT infrastructure and network in home and office environments. ST reduces energy consumption by introducing smart controls, which can make the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system (HVAC), lighting system, and ventilation system intelligent and automated, such as automatically closing roller shutters when shading is required; automatically turning off the fan in the ventilation system when no one is in the room; fine-tuning the parameter configuration of LED brightness through near-field communication (NFC) dynamic tags (ST25DV-PWM).
