Something sad happened again!
A 24-year-old international student studying in the United States, who had just obtained a master's degree, was unfortunately shot and killed by robbers near the school.
After the armed robbery, the robber shot the young student in the chest and drove away. The young student died after being sent to the hospital.
The student was later identified as Zheng, a master's graduate from the University of Chicago, from Sichuan .
According to people familiar with the matter, he studied at Chengdu No. 7 Middle School, graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Hong Kong, and just graduated with a master's degree this summer.
Friends around him describe him as a "gentle and excellent senior."
After his death, his mother asked in the international students' parents group if anyone could contact her son.
However, a young life came to an end.
What is even more heartbreaking is that this is the second case of a foreign student being shot in the United States this year. The last case occurred in January this year and the victim was 30-year-old Chinese doctor Fan Yiran.
No suspect has been found yet
According to local police, at around 2 p.m. on November 9, US time, a dark-colored vehicle approached the victim, Zheng, on the sidewalk at 900 54th Street near the University of Chicago.
A man came out of the car and demanded money from Zheng, then suddenly shot Zheng in the chest several times and drove away.
Residents at the crime scene said that about 10 seconds after they heard the gunshots, they heard the sound of a vehicle fleeing; Zheng fell to the ground bleeding profusely, and some enthusiastic passers-by tried to stop his bleeding but failed.
Afterwards, Zheng was sent to the hospital for treatment, but this did not save him from death.
So far, the police have not found any suspects in the case.
According to Chicago students, the crime scene was not a remote place. There was a children's park nearby with many pedestrians and vehicles. However, the robbers dared to commit the crime there in daytime.
After the incident, the University of Chicago issued a statement on the same day, confirming that Zheng was a master's graduate in statistics from the university.
Afterwards, University of Chicago President Paul Alivisatos expressed his condolences for Zheng’s unfortunate death.
The University of Chicago also issued a statement saying that it will cooperate with the Chicago Police Department to investigate the case and strengthen security patrols on campus. At the same time, it called on people with knowledge of the case to report clues related to the case to assist the police in arresting the suspect.
The Consulate General of the People's Republic of China in Chicago is deeply shocked and saddened by the unfortunate death of Zheng, and expresses deep condolences and sympathy to his family.
The Consulate General strongly condemns the brutal criminal act of killing innocent people and demands that the relevant US authorities investigate and disclose the case as soon as possible and take practical measures to protect the safety of Chinese citizens, including Chinese students.
In addition, the Chinese Students and Scholars Association at the University of Chicago also issued relevant notices and safety reminders, and launched an emergency plan for this matter.
Gentle and excellent senior
He was admitted to the University of Hong Kong with a score of 651 from Chengdu No. 7 Middle School, and then entered the University of Chicago to pursue a master's degree in statistics...
Based on his educational experience, Zheng can be called a "top student".
The statistics program at the University of Chicago is also among the best in the world.
At the same time, Zheng also won awards in mathematical modeling competitions and data science competitions during his studies, and served as a student ambassador of the University of Hong Kong:
In real life, Zheng has published books, written for public accounts, likes playing table tennis, and recently also fell in love with surfing.
The photo in his circle of friends is still from last week, when he participated in his first table tennis competition...
Another HKU alumnus said this in an interview.
Zheng lived with some friends in an apartment building near the school in the United States. One of his roommates, Nick Jackson, said after the incident:
He had just gotten his driver's license and was in a new relationship. He had the world at his disposal, but then this happened.
△ Media Sun-Times Media Wire reported
In addition to these close and directly connected classmates and friends, there are also juniors who have only met a few times and expressed on Zhihu that they "cannot accept" this.
I met my senior six years ago... Although I don’t remember the details very well, I still remember his sunny and easy-going appearance.
Seeing such an outstanding student pass away suddenly, countless netizens felt deeply saddened and hoped that the murderer could be caught and brought to justice as soon as possible.
Some people also hope that Zheng’s parents can get out of their grief as soon as possible.
When choosing a school to study abroad in the future, public security should be put first.
Chicago shootings continue
This incident has once again focused people's attention on Chicago's public security. Many netizens have said in the comment section that Chicago's public security is really bad.
Just two hours before Zheng was shot, a shooting occurred in a neighborhood near the University of Chicago campus.
Police said two local businesses and multiple vehicles were hit by gunfire, and three members of Congress were attacked.
On November 9, in addition to Zheng, two other people died and five were injured in shootings in Chicago.
Someone on Twitter counted the casualties in the Chicago area over the past week:
Shooting deaths: 10
Shooting injuries: 32
Total number of victims: 12
Even last week, a 4-year-old boy was shot and killed in a parked car on the street.
Earlier this year, another Chinese student studying at the University of Chicago was shot and killed .
The 30-year-old Chinese doctoral student was originally scheduled to graduate next year, and had even made a career plan to "return to Peking University to become a teacher", but the sound of a gunshot left him with an eternal regret.
In this regard, the Consulate General in Chicago also reminds Chinese citizens, including Chinese students, to pay close attention to the public security situation in their place of residence. If you encounter security threats, please call the U.S. police or helpline immediately, and seek further assistance from the consulate.
