ON Semiconductor Expands Solutions for Industrial IoT, Smart Home and Wearables
February 27, 2018 -
ON Semiconductor (NASDAQ: ON), driving energy-efficient innovation, has released a new multi-sensor shield and expanded its IoT Development Kit (IDK) software to help engineers address a wider range of high-growth Internet of Things (IoT) applications. The new products enable customers to accelerate product development cycles and deploy IoT solutions faster for a variety of connected health and industrial wearable devices, smart homes, predictive maintenance, asset tracking and other industrial IoT applications.
ON Semiconductor's IDK is an intuitive, modular, node-to-cloud platform that enables rapid prototyping, evaluation and development of IoT solutions, bringing significant value to designers with tight time and resources. The IDK connects to a series of shields/daughter cards on the Arm® SoC motherboard, providing a variety of sensing, processing, connectivity and actuation possibilities under the IoT "umbrella".
The multi-sensor shield adds a variety of inertial and environmental sensors. This, combined with the recently released Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity shield, enables rapid prototyping of a variety of ultra-low power smart home, industrial IoT and wearable solutions.
Software is an integral part of the IDK. In this upgrade of software functions, ON Semiconductor has released IDK software version 4.0. In addition to the existing support for Carriots (Altair) Cloud, it now also includes native support for IBM Cloud. In addition, the embedded operating system running on the IDK motherboard has also been upgraded to mbed version 5.5.
“ON Semiconductor continues to expand its intuitive IoT suite to help customers prototype and develop solutions for different IoT vertical markets and deploy them faster and more cost-effectively,” said Wiren Perera, Director of Internet of Things at ON Semiconductor. “We understand the importance of providing a complete solution from node to cloud, so our new sensing capabilities are complemented by ultra-low power connectivity and actuator options to enable a new class of solutions with industry-leading battery life. Broader cloud support, upgraded operating systems (OS) and configurable mobile apps all demonstrate our commitment to continuously enhancing software capabilities to facilitate rapid product deployment.”
With the powerful combination of additional hardware and software enhancements, designers can now prototype and develop a wider range of IoT devices and solutions. ON Semiconductor is developing an Android mobile application that will be able to see sensor data and control actuators through the phone via low-energy BLE. The application can be dynamically customized for application and use case prototypes.
The IDK Multi-Sensor Shield will be available for customer ordering starting in April.
