Microchip introduces two new digitally enhanced power analog controllers designed for next-generation LED lighting applications
MCP19116 and MCP19117 Enable Intelligent, Configurable and Precise LED Lighting
Microchip Technology Inc., a global leading supplier of integrated microcontrollers, mixed signal, analog devices and flash memory patent solutions, recently released two digitally enhanced power analog controllers designed for LED lighting applications. The new MCP19116 and MCP19117 devices help improve the accuracy of LED lighting, allowing users to accurately control the output intensity of LED light without sacrificing light color or light quality, thereby achieving reliable and durable applications.
Energy efficiency and life span are two major advantages that have been driving the application of LEDs. However, light quality is still one of the most important factors to consider when designing a system. Color, brightness and controllability are key factors for the success of lighting products. Combining the functions and performance of analog controllers with the flexibility of digital interfaces, the MCP19116/7 is an intelligent pulse width modulation (PWM) controller with a fully integrated PIC® MCU core, which saves users costs while providing the highest level of reliability, energy efficiency and light quality. Its digital interface supports communication and configuration, allowing subsystems to report status or be remotely controlled. This feature is indispensable when adding lighting in many applications, especially for those high-reliability automotive devices and Internet of Things (IoT) remote access devices.
“The MCP191 16/7 are designed from the ground up to create superior LED lighting applications and they outperform other similar LED driver ICs on the market,” said Keith Pazul, senior manager of Microchip’s analog power and interface products division. “Many companies claim their controllers can achieve high-precision current regulation, but in fact they ignore the various errors that can be caused by other parts of the system. These new devices from Microchip achieve extremely high accuracy regardless of operating conditions, and with the integrated PIC MCU core to achieve dynamic regulation, they are truly best-in-class solutions.”
In recent years, the market share and coverage of the LED lighting industry have been growing. A report released by BigMarket Research in 2015 stated that the LED lighting market is growing strongly and is expected to maintain an annual growth rate of 45% by 2020. At the same time, some analysts predict that the entire market size will exceed US$63 billion in 2020. Industry analysts have basically made consistent predictions on the development prospects of the LED lighting industry.
“LED applications have been widely accepted.” Mr. Pazul expressed the same view. “Microchip has made a variety of technology investments to standardize and promote the upgrading of future LED lighting products. We are honored to be a major supplier to provide excellent lighting solutions for various applications and end markets.”
Development Support
The MCP19117 flyback evaluation board (part number: ADM00663) released by Microchip at the same time is also available. The flyback design provided by this evaluation board can support constant current loads up to 50V, which is very suitable for driving medium voltage LED strings. Microchip also provides a full set of development tool support for MCP19116 and MCP19117, including MPLAB® X Integrated Development Environment (IDE), as well as MPLAB X plug-ins dedicated to digital enhanced power analog controllers.
Availability
The MCP19116 is available in a 4x4 QFN package and is now available for sampling and mass production in quantities of 10,000. The MCP19117 is available in a 5x5 QFN package and is now available for sampling and mass production in quantities of 10,000.
