Melexis is proud to join the ISELED Alliance, which is focused on developing and marketing innovative automotive LED lighting - "digital LED". Its members include Inova Semiconductors, Dominant Opto Technologies, Lucie Labs, OLSA Group, NXP, TE Connectivity, Pforzheim University and Valeo.
The ISELED Alliance is committed to creating an ecosystem that can provide complete solutions (including hardware and software) based on the ISELED concept. Its core product is a "digital" RGB LED that can be integrated in a small package. In addition to simplifying LED control, this innovative approach can also enable a completely new expansion of the functionality of automotive LED lighting.
The new generation of automotive lighting features hundreds of LEDs, often in the form of flexible strips, each containing multiple individual RGB LEDs that need to be individually controlled to create dynamic effects. Each "digital LED" on the strip contains one red, green and blue LED, integrated in the same package as the ISELED controller. The "digital LEDs" can be connected in a daisy chain. Up to 4,079 of them can be connected via a differential bus at 2 Mbps. The LEDs are controlled by an external master controller, such as NXP's S32K microcontroller family. This allows new applications and lighting controls to be used in applications that are not suitable for the relatively slow LIN bus. The ISELED system has a data rate of 2Mbit, which allows lighting effects to be achieved at true video rates. Using application software developed by Alliance member LucieLabs, pleasing lighting effects can be created and controlled via an app on a smartphone.
“Melexis is proud to join the ISELED Alliance and contribute to one of the most innovative areas in the automotive industry – lighting,” said Michael Bender, Product Line Manager for Lighting Products at Melexis. “As a global automotive semiconductor supplier, we place great emphasis on innovation and technology development. Today, we offer a broad range of ICs and IC packages that enable cost-effective and innovative lighting for the automotive industry to create a better future. We hope to use this knowledge to help ISELED further develop into a recognized industry standard and gain a foothold in other application areas.”
“The addition of Melexis is further evidence of the widespread recognition of ISELED as a highly innovative technology and its associated ecosystem,” said Robert Kraus, CEO of Inova Semiconductors and one of the founders of the alliance. “We will soon announce other outstanding new members such as Melexis, further demonstrating the alliance’s unique technology concept and enabling exciting new LED lighting functions in the next generation of vehicles.”
