Although it does not have Apple as a major customer, Synaptics has always been an important brand in the touch screen field. In this 2014 Computex, Synaptics CEO Rick Bergman also came to Taiwan in person to participate in the event and accepted media interviews. At the same time, he expressed his high attention to the Asian market. In fact, Bergman also admitted that Asia is indeed an important market and repeatedly expressed the amazing growth of the Asian market in his speech.

The company has double-digit revenue growth every year, and it is expected that fingerprint recognition will become a popular technology in the market. In Q3 2014, the company's revenue from mobile devices increased by 44% year-on-year due to fingerprint recognition technology. Currently, 74% of the company's revenue comes from mobile phones, 10% from tablets, and 16% from laptops; in fiscal 2016, the company predicts that the revenue from laptops will be less than 10%.

Fingerprint recognition will become standard

Bergman said at the meeting that the company's products have already entered the mobile phone industry in Greater China. Mobile phone manufacturers including Huawei, ZTE, Lenovo, OPPO, HTC, Xiaomi, etc. have already adopted Synaptics' touch technology. At the same time, more and more mobile phone manufacturers will begin to use fingerprint touch technology. According to Rick Bergman, in addition to traditional high-end mobile phones, fingerprint recognition will also begin to enter the low-end smartphone market next year, which seems to imply that fingerprint recognition will become a standard device for mobile phones in the next few years.

According to Synaptics' own survey, the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of high-end mobile phones will slow down to 9%, but the CAGR of low-end smartphones will continue to maintain 19%. In 2016, high-end mobile phones are expected to be shipped 921 million units, while low-end mobile phones will be shipped 565 million units. The total shipment of smartphones in 2016 is expected to reach 1.5 billion units.

Since Apple has its own Touch ID technology, when fingerprint touch is about to become a standard feature of mobile phones, Synaptics' biggest enemy in the same field may be Apple. Synaptics will also expand the field of fingerprint touch to the entire mobile phone control panel in the near future. The company's long-term goal is to extend fingerprint recognition to the entire panel of smart devices so that the entire panel can perform fingerprint recognition.

Wearable Devices and the Internet of Things

Although the company's main revenue comes from notebook computers, tablets and smartphones, the company is also trying to improve touch technology in various fields. Bergman said that starting from the fourth quarter of 2014, there will be more smart watches using Synaptics touch ICs on the market, but the proportion of smart watch touch in the company's products is not yet clear. In fact, Google Glass uses Synaptics' touch IC technology.

However, compared to smartphones and tablets, the biggest challenge for watches is that the touch area is too small, which limits the scope and functions of the watch. Synaptics may also develop some 3D touch technology (using gesture sensing) that is more suitable for smart watches. For example, placing a finger on a specific periphery of the watch can activate certain special functions of the watch.

When faced with the upcoming issue of the Internet of Things, Bergman said that the company has close cooperation with panel manufacturers including Chi Mei (in fact, there are many important panel manufacturers in Asia, which is also the reason why Synaptics attaches importance to Asia). Therefore, they are confident that as long as IoT product manufacturers choose panel manufacturers, most of them should choose Synaptics solutions.

Currently, the company's products are also used in smart TV remote control panels.
