Overall, 2021 was a good year for technology professionals in the U.S., with average salaries rising 6.9% to $104,566, according to online recruiting firm Dice, which published the numbers last month in its annual tech salary report.
Hired, another online job search company, put a higher dollar figure in its 2021 U.S. tech salary data than Dice ($152,000 on average), but reported an overall decrease of 1.1% from 2020, which it attributed to a shift in hiring toward professionals early in their careers.
However, competition for machine learning, natural language processing, and artificial intelligence experts has weakened in 2021, with average salaries falling by 2.1%, 7.8%, and 8.9%, respectively, according to Dice. This comes after repeated (and sometimes dramatic) increases in recent years. For example, the average salary in the United States for software engineers with machine learning expertise increased by 22% in 2019 compared to 2018, and then increased by another 3.1% in 2020.
“There are a variety of factors that could be driving salaries down in these industries,” Michelle Marian, chief marketing officer at Dice, told IEEESpectrum. “One important consideration is that more technical people are learning and mastering these skills. Given that skill sets are more easily found, the increased talent pool over time could lead to employers having to pay at least slightly less. We’re already seeing this with a range of certifications and other highly specialized technical skills.”
Meanwhile, the scarcity of experts in the open source enterprise search platform Solr pushed average salaries to the top of the list.
As in 2020, major tech companies in 2021 are touting plans to relocate from Silicon Valley to Austin, Texas. However, Silicon Valley tech salaries, which were already above the Texas average, grew slightly, rising 5% to $133,204, while Austin's rose 4.6% to $109,176. (These numbers don't take into account cost of living, which generally gives Austin a significant advantage, especially if you're looking to buy a home.) But the biggest salary increases came outside of those two tech hubs, with Seattle, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Chicago all seeing double-digit increases, according to a Dice analysis.
Dice also looked at salary changes by occupation. After a decline in 2020, salaries for managers rose 6% on average to $151,983 in 2021. The second most lucrative tech occupation, systems architect, also saw big gains, rising 5.1% to $147,991.
But Dice found that web developers were the fastest-growing tech occupation, with average salaries increasing 21.3% to $98,912. Tech professionals such as database administrators, data analysts, UX/UI designers, and technical support engineers also saw double-digit growth.
However, demand for cybersecurity analysts and data engineers appears to be slowing. After growing 16.3% in 2020 over 2019, the average salary for cybersecurity analysts fell 0.8% in 2021 to $102,253, and the average salary for data engineers fell 1.1% to $117,295 after growing 4.7% in 2020.
The Dice report speculates that this change may be “related to the proliferation of tools designed to perform highly specialized functions in some of these roles.”
