TSMC founder Morris Chang recently said that the chip shortage is due to the underestimation of demand by chip users, not the manufacturing side. The overall chip shortage is a combination of factors such as underestimated demand, natural disasters, logistics congestion and a surge in digital demand. He also used the chip shortage as an example to explain that a free market with free trade and free competition is still the best solution to the issue of chip shortages or surpluses.
Morris Chang then mentioned the issue of supply chain resilience. He said that the phenomenon of semiconductor supply bottlenecks has been frequently discussed recently. The chip shortage is the result of factors such as underestimated demand, natural disasters, logistics congestion and a surge in digital demand. He emphasized that in fact, it is the "chip users" who underestimate the demand, rather than the manufacturers who underestimate the demand for users.
Morris Chang pointed out that although any shortage of key components is a serious problem, the free market with free trade and free competition is still the best solution. He said that in fact, in response to the recent chip shortage, everyone in the semiconductor industry has significantly increased manufacturing capacity, which just shows that we believe that the free market is the best solution to the problem of shortage or surplus.
Regarding Morris Chang's suggestion at the summit that free trade seems to have added some conditions recently, most of which have adverse consequences, the media was concerned about what he was referring to. Morris Chang reiterated that the conditions, for example, in the field of semiconductor integrated circuits, the United States said that it would do more in its own territory. In fact, the United States has been advocating free trade for decades, and suddenly added a condition, "to do more in its own (the United States) territory", that is the condition.
Morris Chang said that he was the only leader or leader representative who mentioned the issue of chip shortage. He said that when no government took any effective action on the issue of chip shortage, the private sector quickly increased production capacity because the private sector could quickly increase production capacity in a free market environment.
TSMC senior vice president: optimistic about the development of semiconductor industry in the next ten years
Qin Yipei, senior vice president of TSMC, the leading wafer foundry, recently attended the Chengdu Electronics Forum and gave a special speech on trends and innovations in the semiconductor industry. He was also optimistic about the development of Taiwan's semiconductor industry in the next decade. However, he believes that there has been no relief in the recent chip shortage and that the situation will continue for some time.
Qin Yongpei first led everyone to review the development of semiconductors. He mentioned that in the past 60 years, there have been many killer applications that have driven the growth of semiconductors, such as mainframe computers in the 1960s and 1970s, PCs in the 1980s and 1990s, and later mobile phones. The development of semiconductors has also progressed from microns to nanometers.
Qin Yongpei also said that the future trend of semiconductors is high-speed computing and digital transformation. In terms of high-speed computing, ubiquitous computing will become the next killer application in the future, and the global demand for computing performance will also increase significantly. Such demand will also drive a surge in demand for chips.
As for the digital transformation, it happened much faster than expected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In order for companies to maintain operations, global companies also began to use working from home and distance learning to maintain operations. However, all of these require 3C products, and the strong demand has also made the entire supply chain very busy.
Qin Yongpei believes that these two factors have caused the supply chain to remain chaotic until now, the chip shortage has not yet been alleviated, and this situation will continue for some time.
However, Qin Yongpei is very optimistic about the future. He expects semiconductors to continue their growth trend, especially since Taiwan's semiconductor industry is very intensive in capital, technology, and manpower, and has great advantages in the global semiconductor industry. In addition, both the ecological environment and supply chain are very complete. He believes that Taiwan's semiconductor industry will be very optimistic in the next 10 years.
Qin Yongpei also pointed out that many countries are now trying to localize semiconductor manufacturing, but this violates economic principles and is not easy to achieve.
Speaking of TSMC itself, Qin Yongpei said that TSMC expects to have a three-nanometer output in the second half of 2022, and the company is also expanding production at a five-fold rate. Qin Yongpei explained that TSMC can become the leader in wafer foundry because of the three major factors of technological leadership, manufacturing excellence, and customer trust.
