In this issue of DigiKey Daily, we recommend two products to you - STMicroelectronics VIPERGAN50 advanced quasi-resonant offline high-voltage converter and Toshiba TCKE8xx and TCKE712BNL series eFuse ICs.

Product 1: STMicroelectronics VIPERGAN50 advanced quasi-resonant offline high-voltage converter


The STMicroelectronics VIPERGAN50 high-voltage converter is an advanced quasi-resonant offline high-voltage converter featuring E-mode GaN HEMTs. VIPERGAN50 is designed for use in medium power quasi-resonant ZVS (zero voltage switching when the switch is on) flyback converters, capable of delivering up to 50W output power over a wide range. This high-voltage converter integrates a comprehensive set of features to provide an extremely flexible and easy-to-use chip to help design efficient offline power supplies.

ZVS quasi-resonant operation features dynamic blanking time characteristics and valley synchronization capabilities that always turn on the power switch at the valley of drain resonance. Ultimately, the operation and characteristics reduce switching losses and maximize overall efficiency under any input line and load conditions. Advanced power management features feature low quiescent current for low standby power consumption. Feedforward compensation reduces the maximum output peak power variation over the entire input voltage range.

In addition to the above functions, VIPERGAN50 also supports protection features that can greatly improve the safety and reliability of the final product. These protections include output overvoltage protection, overtemperature protection (OTP), overload protection (OLP), and power-up/power-down protection that sets the input voltage level to power up and down the converter. Input overvoltage protection (iOVP) protects the system in the event of an abnormal increase in input lines. All protection functions are implemented in auto-start mode.

Product 2: Toshiba TCKE8xx and TCKE712BNL series eFuse IC
Toshiba TCKE8xx and TCKE712BNL eFuse ICs integrate comprehensive high-speed, resettable and low on-resistance (RON) circuit protection functions in a single compact 3x3mm WSON10B package. These eFuse ICs provide short-circuit protection and adjustable overcurrent protection with adjustable inrush current slew rate. In addition, the TCKE8xx features thermal shutdown, fixed overvoltage clamping, and reverse current blocking when used with an external MOSFET (TCKE8xx) and built-in FET ( TCKE712BNL ). Therefore, TCKE8xx is ideally suited for use in a variety of industrial applications, home appliances, office automation equipment, and battery-powered IoT sensor devices. Integrating eFuse into the design ensures that the product meets the requirements set by international safety standards such as IEC/UL 62368-1 and UL 2367.
The TCKE8xx and TCKE712BNL series can adjust overcurrent and input undervoltage using external resistors. Undervoltage settings are implemented using a dual resistor ladder with maximum supply input voltages of 18VDC (TCKE8xx) and 13.2VDC (TCKE712BNL). The overcurrent clamp is set with a single resistor. For detailed information on short circuit functionality and current clamp accuracy, please refer to the data sheet. TCKE8xx and TCKE712BNL have high-speed short-circuit protection of 150ns and 320ns respectively.
The Toshiba TCKE805 series is designed for 5V power rail applications and has a fixed output overvoltage clamp setting of 6.04V. The TCKE812 is suitable for 12V designs and clamps to 15.1V. TCKE800 does not have an overvoltage clamping function.
The Toshiba TCKE712BNL is a pure latch-up eFuse that uses a built-in FET to perform reverse current blocking and provides 0.51A to 3.65A +20% overcurrent protection through an external resistor (OCP). Its current limit setting range varies based on Vin operation. The output of this device is FLAG capable (EN is ON when "high").
The eFuse IC provides short-circuit protection and adjustable overcurrent protection with adjustable inrush current slew rate. eFuse ICs are suitable for a variety of industrial applications, home appliances, office automation equipment and battery-powered IoT sensor devices.
