Q: Modular cable pinout style: reverse or direct

Many customers have always had questions about the pinout of modular cables .
When searching for modular cables, one of the filters to consider is style.
What is the difference between reverse and standard styles?
A quick way to determine the difference between flat cable assemblies is to lay them flat.
A reverse style plug has a raised tab on one end and a recessed tab on the other end.
Sometimes this type of pinout may be referred to as "thru".
These cables are used for data transmission.
Looking at DigiKey part number A2663R-25-ND ( Assmann part number AT-S-26-6/6/S-25/R) shows that the part is a reverse style. The specification sheet will include drawings showing plug orientation and pinout.
The pin layout is pass-through.
A standard style plug has both tabs on the same side.
Sometimes this type of pin layout may be called "reverse" or "crossover".
These cables are used for voice transmission, such as in telephony applications.
Looking at DigiKey part number A1663R-25-ND ( Assmann part number AT-S-26-6/6/S-25) shows that this part is a standard style. The specification sheet will include drawings showing plug orientation and pinout.
The pinout is a crossover.
Another way to confirm is to place the plugs side by side and look at the pinout.
This method is suitable for cable assemblies in coil form. Because the cable is rolled into a coil, the orientation of the plug changes.
Looking at the DigiKey part number A1662R-10C-ND ( the Assmann part number is AT-C-26-6/6/B-10) shows that this is a standard style flat coil cable.
The specification sheet will show that one of the tabs on the plug faces up and the other faces down. This can cause confusion.
Be sure to look at the pinout.
Looking at the DigiKey part number A2662R-10C-ND ( the Assmann part number is AT-C-26-6/6/B-10/R) shows that this is a reverse style flat coil cable.
The plug orientation is shown in the data sheet and is labeled on the bottom of the plug. This can also cause confusion.
Be sure to check out the pinout.
